Adding the Finishing Touches to Your Home Move

After months or maybe even years of waiting and preparing for your big home move, it’s finally on the horizon. With just a few days to go, the excitement is doubling and you can’t wait to finally get started with your new chapter in life.

You’ve still got a lot of work to do, though, if you want your home move to be everything that you dream it to be. Sure, you may have done the majority of the essential things, but there are still some finishing touches that need to be added to ensure everything goes off without a hitch. To find out what these crucial finishing touches are, read on.

Ask the seller a few vital questions

At the moment, you might not be looking past your home move; your only goal is to get yourself and your worldly belongings from point A to point B. You can’t completely ignore your future, however, no matter how stressful and important the present might be, as doing so will make your life ten times harder going forward. It means that you have to keep one eye on the rest of your life, so you have to find out as much about your new home as possible. By doing this, you’ll give yourself the best chance possible of circumventing all the problems it might have, and you’ll give yourself a head start when it comes to fixing them.

When it comes to questioning what may be wrong with your new home, the best person to ask is the person that is selling it. A few of the vital questions you should ask him or her include:

  1. Where can the main stopcock be found (in order to turn off the water supply)?

  2. Where are the gas and electric meters situated?

  3. What day is the bin collection day?

  4. Who supplies the energy and broadband?

  5. Where is the thermostat hiding?

Asking these questions, as well as any others that you think are of equal importance, is vital if you want to make your life as easy as possible going forward.

Redirect your post

Redirecting your post is not likely to be something that you've considered an important task, or even remembered, as your home move has intensified. It is important that you remember to perform this task, however, as, again, your life will be made much harder in the future if you don’t.

When it comes to doing this, if you don’t know the person that is moving into the home you are selling, then you’re going to have to get in touch with your government’s postal redirection service. It may cost you a bit of money, but that is an expense you're going to have to fork out for if you want your post to continue to reach you. On the other hand, if you do know the person buying your home, then you can ask them to forward your mail on for you. While they do this, however, you should make sure you are contacting your frequent senders (such as your insurers or debit and credit card providers) and that you are updating your contact deals with them. It is only fair, as the person in your old home will have enough to deal with themselves without having to get your post to you!

Clean your new home

If you want to settle into your new home straight away, then you’re going to have to ensure that it is a liveable environment before you move in. This, first and foremost, means making sure it is clean.

Of course, you can’t barge in and start cleaning while the seller of your new home is still living there. Although, you can always ask them if it is okay if you do! What you can do, however, is take a few days before you move your stuff into your new pad to give it a deep clean, whether it’s you or an outside force that perform this task for you. When you choose an external force such as this service to complete the cleaning, you’ll be able to be sure that you’ll be stepping into a spotless building. They’ll do everything from cleaning out the freezers to wiping out the inside cabinets to removing cobwebs and dust from any and all crevices.

Do a number of things to make removal day go smoothly

Moving day doesn't have to be as stressful as you have long forecasted it to be, but only if you put a number of last minute things into place in regards to it. You may have already done the bulk of your packing, but there are, probably, still some finishing touches for you to be getting on with. These tasks include:

  1. Labeling your boxes with the rooms in which they are set to be placed in within your new home (make sure to put these labels on the tops of the boxes).

  2. Making sure that screws and bolts are kept with the furniture that they are relevant to (try putting them in freezer bags and then sticking them to the pieces of furniture in question).

  3. Flattening cardboard boxes down in your new home to protect its flooring.

  4. Moving the bulk of your furniture into your new home before anything else to ensure you aren’t making moving around the new home a difficult task

Register in your new area

If you’ve moved out of an area and into a new one, then you're going to have to get registered. Importantly, this means registering to vote in your new area to ensure that you are aren’t missed off the polling cards when it comes to the next big election.

If you want to ensure that your next big home move goes off without a hitch, you simply have to be making sure that you put the finishing touches above in place. By doing so, you’ll make your new home easier to settle into and you’ll help yourself circumvent some serious problems going forward.
