Do you prefer wood cabinets or steel cabinets? That is the question. In all seriousness, have you ever considered the pros and cons of the material your cabinets are constructed out of? Many people choose interior fixtures, like cabinets, based off of the design or appeal the cabinet has opposed to the material. I want to give you a few things to think about before you purchase cabinets for your home or decide to replace certain materials you already have. These are logical unbiased points being made in an effort to aid you in making the best decision possible when it comes to long term cabinet maintenance.
The Use of Cabinets
Before we delve into deeper topics on the subject matter, lets first begin by analyzing why we use our cabinets. Most cabinets are used to store items to keep them out of the way and in a safe place. We find them in industries, in offices, and in homes. We must remember that sometimes we put things in a cabinet like tools or cleaning supplies. Sometimes the cabinets can be holding a lot of weight and we need something sturdy. Cabinets are also exposed to the elements whether we like to admit it or not. This is a big factor in choosing cabinets and what material you would like yours made out of.
Are you considering a steel cabinet or one made out of wood or plastic? Your decision matters. Another factor that should be brought up is the durability of the material of your cabinets. If they are frail, one swift slam could disable your cabinet's operation entirely. This would not be a wise choice of material. Even after a couple of slams of your cabinets, they could be worn down to the point of needing to be replaced and you would have to buy a different material either way. Now that we have explained the importance of cabinets and their material, we will explain certain points about different materials used in the construction of cabinets.
Wooden Cabinets
Wooden cabinets are, of course, made from wood. This means that they are more likely to rot over time when posed to the elements. Of course, this all depends on where you are located and if the weather in your area is unforgiving towards wooden fixtures. Wooden fixtures also have a tendency to be prone toward termite infestation as well. This can be easily prevented, but wood is a surface that allows for insects to hide and burrow deep within the texture of the wood going unnoticed for weeks to months on end. Wooden cabinets are also easily broken unless they are constructed from hardened wood; even then, they are susceptible to being damaged. As discussed above, slamming can affect wooden cabinets more often than not. After years of slamming cabinets, or possibly even one good slam, the whole cabinet door can fall off. There are plenty of well-designed and crafted wooden cabinets on the market that will last years on end and have manufacturer's guarantees as well. If you feel like wooden cabinets are what you want then, by all means, go for it! Besides, you can always paint wooden cabinets and remodel them at your leisure!
Steel Cabinets
Steel cabinets are a 21st-century innovation. They provide a sturdy insect and bug-free environment. Steel cabinets are constructed from all steel materials and they are not prone to termite infestations and screws weakening and falling out of their fixtures. You can buy industrial cabinets, utility cabinets, countertop cabinets, janitorial and industrial computer cabinets. This is just a partial list. There are many more to choose from.
For the most part, steel cabinets are able to remain clean for long amounts of time and the only thing you have to worry about is dust buildup. They are built to be heavy duty and maintain and hold heavy items sometimes up to hundreds of pounds. I think if you ask anyone, the wise choice would be a steel cabinet. At the end of the day, however, the decisions are yours to make and be satisfied with.
