Helpful Tips That Will Make You Achieve An Optimum Sleep Quality

A good night’s sleep is essential to your physical and mental health as is regular exercise and a balanced diet. Quality sleep has been proven to help with weight loss, improved cognitive function, and enhanced exercise performance. While most of us know the importance of sleep, that does not mean it is always easy to achieve that optimum sleep level. Several factors come into play in getting a good night’s sleep.

Here are five helpful tips that will ensure you achieve your optimum sleep quality.

1. Have A Consistent Sleep Schedule

Your body has an internal clock, the circadian rhythm, which is an internal process regulating your sleep-wake cycle, aligning itself with sunrise and sunset. You can train your body clock with a consistent sleep schedule. For instance, if you go to bed every night at 10:30 pm and wake up every morning at 7 am, your body will naturally adapt to these timings after a few weeks. After a while, you might find that you no longer need an alarm because your body clock will have a rough idea of when to get up. If you struggle with sleep, then incorporating a consistent sleep schedule into your life will well and truly make a difference.

2. Limit Your Caffeine Intake

A cup of coffee or tea in the morning is an essential part of waking up for many of us, with 90% of the US population consuming caffeine. While there are many health benefits to consuming caffeine, such as increased energy and enhanced focus, caffeine can stay in your blood for 6 to 8 hours. So if you are consuming caffeine late in the day, your nervous system will be stimulated way into the nighttime, which will prevent you from relaxing. To avoid being kept up at night, try reducing your caffeine intake or not having any after 3 or 4 pm. If you do find yourself craving that cup of coffee or tea later in the afternoon, try opting for a decaf version, so you can still get your fix without the caffeine.

3. Get Comfortable Pillows

Please do not underestimate the importance of comfortable pillows for achieving your optimum level of good sleep. Not only do your pads affect sleep quality, but they also can lead to back and neck pains if you have unsupportive flat pillows. A good pillow will reduce your restlessness throughout the night as you will feel more comfortable. There are many different types of pillows to choose from, including memory foam, feathers, latex, organic cotton, and more. Opting for a new pillow such as the Kakun 100% organic cotton pillow can make a real difference to how you sleep. It may seem trivial, but something small, such as changing a cushion, can significantly improve sleep quality. Depending on who you are, you might want to consider more specific options for your needs. For instance, if you are a bit older and suffer from back and neck pain, focus on pillows that are ergonomically designed to ease those pains.

4. Reduce Screen Time Before Bed

Exposure to blue light before bedtime can lead to a significant negative impact on your quality of sleep. Blue light is given off by smartphones, tablets, and laptops, all of which people use before bed to unwind. If you can put away the screens and relax by listening to music or having a nice warm bath, this is preferable. If part of your nighttime routine is scrolling on your phone, then you might want to consider downloading an app that blocks the blue light on your smartphone screen. You can find these apps on both Android and iPhone.

Another reason to avoid screen time late at night is that it can increase anxiety. ‘Doom scrolling’ through your phone, looking at the news can induce natural stress and sadness, both of which are not helpful for a good night’s sleep.

5. Increase Physical Activity In The Day

Increasing your physical activity levels in the day is one of the best ways to ensure a good night’s sleep. It can be hard to achieve sometimes, primarily if you work an office job, as you can end up spending hours on end just sitting down. However, a study in older adults found that exercise halved the amount of time it took to sleep and even provided 41 more minutes of sleep per night. The physical activity you do does not have to be extreme and strenuous; sometimes, just going for a longer walk can make all the difference. Consider walking or biking to work, or if you work at home, make sure you are getting up, moving around, and enjoying the fresh air now and again.

However, avoid exercising too late in the day, as the stimulatory effects of exercise can cause spikes in adrenaline, preventing you from falling asleep.

Sleep is vital for your overall health and well-being, so if you are ready to make a change in your sleeping habits, use the five tips above to help you achieve optimum sleep quality.
