Wall Paper

There was once a time when decorating a home was a piece of cake. People rarely thought about invoking color schemes or finding statement pieces to hang on their walls. Within the last few decades, however, the interior design business began to boom. Nowadays, the interior of a person’s home is not just about comfort; a person’s home is about reflecting who they are, and that reflection starts with the base of any room: the walls.

One of the horrors of redecorating a house is finding the right kind of paint or wallpaper for any given room. This is always a challenge: homeowners desire something unique that matches their tastes but does not look cheap. Homeowners want something easy to put up, but also high-quality and more unique than the standard drab white walls of most San Diego homes. Finding the right type of wallpaper can make or break the design of any room, but you can put a custom mural wallpaper that best suits the design that you like.

Inspired Walls

If standout, sophisticated wallpaper is what you are looking for, Carl Robinson’s pieces are perfect. Carl Robinson is a wallpaper designer who creates eye-catching wallpaper and wall art pieces out of unusual materials. For Robinson, design is a family business; his father was a prominent designer in England, and he grew up in the artistic world. In 2003, Robinson joined Wallquest—one of the most innovative wallpaper companies—as a designer.

Robinson’s designs are notable because they include textured wallpapers made out of unique materials. Some of the materials Robinson uses include metallics, cork, silk, grasscloth, embroidery, fabrics, and paper. His designs use sophisticated, upscale patterns with textured materials to create artistic wallpaper in a variety of styles.

Exotic Materials

Robinson uses each material to evoke a different style. For example, some of Robinson’s designs are made out of silks produced in Lake Como, Italy. Robinson uses silk in some of his designs to preserve the tradition of Italian artisans. Robinson uses his metallic materials to capture and reflect light, which he then softens with opaque overprints. By using the overprints, the designs on Robinson’s wallpaper become matte and stand out from the shimmering metallic background.

Robinson uses cork to create rustic, textured metallic designs, and he uses grasscloth for more contemporary, versatile, and classic designs. For those who want a more traditional wallpaper option, Robinson’s collections also offer a series of designs made from paper. The prints are done with water-based inks on recycled paper, for the environmentally conscious.

Perhaps the most unique materials Robinson uses in his wallpaper designs are fabrics and embroidery. Fabrics and embroidery are commonly used for many household interior decorating projects—curtains, throw pillows, duvet covers—but these materials are generally not used as wallpaper. The fabrics are used to create soft and elegant designs throughout a room. These fabrics can be either printed or woven fabrics that are sophisticated by nature. For Robinson’s embroidery designs, the stitching is meticulously woven into the fabric in intricate shapes and patterns. Some designs even utilize beading.

Robinson’s Collections

Robinson currently offers 12 different themed collections of his wallpaper work. Each themed collection offers a unique style and feeling that differs from the others. For example, Robinson’s Romantique collection features a lot of soft, matte colors and floral prints. Some of the flower prints, such as "Ida," include an unbelievable about of detail and accuracy in recreating floral images. Others, such as the "Imperial" print, are a little more abstract. Pieces like "Imperial" capture the soft and romantic nature of florals while providing a whimsical and abstract appearance.

The Monte Carlo collection, on the other hand, features intricate, extravagant designs reminiscent of the Marie Antoinette era. "Galena," for example, is a repeating pattern of a curved and intricate crest. The Monte Carlo wallpaper also has a selection of patterns that use Swarovski crystals embedded within the wallpaper. The use of these crystals in the Monte Carlo designs is the ultimate display of sophistication and elegance. Swarovski crystals are available in two different pieces: "Galloway" and "Galena."

Carl Robinson's Eldon

The Reflect collection consists entirely of metallic wallpaper creations with matte designs on a shimmering background. This collection is perfect for anyone who ultimately wants their rooms to stand out. The pieces are similar to the Monte Carlo collection—they feature extravagant designs fit for royalty—but they are all printed on metallic paper. Pieces like "Emerson" and "Eldon" offer the extravagance of the Monte Carlo collection with an extra shimmer and flare to make the walls really stand out.

One of the collections worth noting is the most recent collection. Robinson’s Art collection features patterns made from textiles, papers, and embroidered fabrics. This collection is more subtle than some of his earlier works. The colors are a little more muted, but the patterns are incredibly intricate and eye-catching. The piece "London," for example, features geometric shapes in black and white, shades of grey, or primary colors.

Wall Art: more than just wallpaper.

In addition to creating one-of-a-kind wallpaper, Robinson also designs wall art. Robinson’s wall art is different from his wallpaper because instead of coating an entire room or wall, the art is meant to draw the eye to a particular spot like a painting. However, unlike a painting, wall art does not need a frame; rather, it blends seamlessly into the wall. Of course, the pieces can be framed, if necessary. They can also stretch from floor to ceiling, thus fully decorating the blank walls in a way that traditional paintings do not.

Carl Robinson's Wall Art: Davenport

One of Robinson’s collections consists of mostly wall art. The atmosphere is a large collection of photographs, paintings and textured art pieces meant to decorate bland walls. Some of the photographs used by Robinson are iconic: the piece "Desmond," for example, features an angled black-and-white photograph of the Eiffel Tower, while "Dover" features a rustic black-and-white shot of old trucks and suitcases. Other pieces of wall art within this collection, however, are a little edgier. His textured piece of wall art, "Daventry," for example, consists of layered pieces of painted grey papers. The piece "Davenport" is designed in the same vein of a Nine Inch Nails album cover: cracked, rustic, and with faded colors and splotched paints. "Davenport" adds a rustic and old-time European feel to any room.

Robinson’s pieces are—naturally—a little pricey. His wall art pieces sell for between $200-$500 each. Wallquest Inc is located in Wayne, Pennsylvania, and Carl Robinson currently serves as the company’s Design Director. Their international partner company, Wallquest Limited, is located in Preston, United Kingdom. Designs can be purchased online through Seabrook Wallcoverings in Memphis.
