The L88 Corvette was designed specifically with racing in mind. It was built to do one thing, dominate on the track. Only 20 of these were made making it one of the rarest and most sought-after Corvettes in existence. The 1967 Corvette L88 represented the pinnacle of American racing history. Chevrolet engineers combined the perfect ingredients and produced a legendary Corvette that stood out in a class all by itself.

The 427 cubic inch engine was officially rated at 430 horsepower. Those who drove one or raced the L88 said that the true horsepower was much higher. Estimates were as high as 550 horsepower. Earth-shattering speed, and a sexy and functional body design made the L88 an American automotive legend. Chevrolet purposely under rated the output in order to discourage your every day, non-racing driver from purchasing one. The L88 had one mission, to win at the track.

The engine was crafted with a forged crankshaft, aluminum heads and a high lift camshaft. At this time manufacturers did not build engines for everyday use with these components. They all contributed to the high performance and output that was built into the car.

The beauty of the L88 was that it was built with one goal in mind, racing. In order to accomplish their goal of building a successful racing car, features like power steering, a radio, air conditioning and a heater were not included. You might say that if a component added unnecessary weight to the car it was eliminated. This Corvette was not for the faint at heart who wanted to just look good. It was a beast that left competitor smelling exhaust fumes every time it raced. The L88 Corvette was as close to a race car that a street legal car could get.

Only 20 units every built making it a rare, and coveted collector car. It was not highly advertised or promoted. The L88 met SCCA (sports car club of America) requirements while also being ‘street legal’. As the expression goes the L88 was ‘no joke’. Most found their way into the hands of owners that raced them.

Collectors who want a rare American muscle car that reached the pinnacle of excellence in true road and track fashion should look for a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette L88-if you can find one today. Since only 20 were produced, if you can find one today it will definitely set your collection apart.

At a time when big engines, fast cars and racing was a moving a bold statement in automotives, Chevrolet delivered. Unmatched performance and racing pedigree makes this one of the most sought after Corvettes ever built. The L88 has been known to go for as much as seven figures at auction today.
