Your New Obsession: Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey

If you are a whiskey aficionado, you may want to skip this review. Even hearing the term ‘flavored whiskey’ probably puts a bad taste in your mouth. Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey is not your grandfather’s whiskey. Once it expands, it will be beloved by frat boys and bachelor parties. Serious whiskey drinkers will even put it in the same category as Fireball. I understand where they are coming from, distorting their sacred whiskey with flavoring. But they are wrong. Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey is amazing and will take the world by storm.

Skrewball was created out of OB Noodle House by husband and wife duo Steven Yeng and Brittany Merrill Yeng. Steven has a passion for peanut butter. Brittany has a chemistry degree. Seeing the popularity of their peanut butter whiskey shots at OB Noodle House, they decided to bottle it. Easy, right? Nope! It took five years of experimenting to perfect Skrewball, bringing together the delicious taste with something stable and with a light texture.

Since launching in July, I’ve seen it pop up on cocktail menus across San Diego. My favorite iteration I’ve tried is at Hillcrest’s Backdoor Betty’s. Their version is the Beso de Muerte, combining Skrewball with Mr. Black Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur and Bitterman’s Mole Bitters, served up with a smoked sea salt rim. At home, I drink Skrewball on the rocks or as a shot, though they have cocktail recipes on their website that are more dessert than a drink, for those with a sweet tooth.

And as for mass appeal? Americans love the nostalgia of peanut butter. Skrewball nails the taste. Combine that with the very approachable price point of $24.99--$29.99 and you have yourself a new American obsession.
