According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average person spends up to 90% of their waking life indoors! With this striking fact demonstrating how much time we really spend under a roof, it is important that our home design is harmonious with our preferences, needs, and way of life. This post will provide some inspiration to designing a classy and tasteful home. There are many different styles that one can draw inspiration from to design your dream home. From newer, modern styles to more elegant traditional styles - or even a blend of the two.
Contemporary Cleanliness
Modern design has been a big thing since the middle of the 20th century, and it has made a splash in the 21st in a big way. Visiting any major city will be a feast for your eyes of towering glass and steel. Cost effective, efficient, clean, and functional - the modernism movement has roots in an effort to rebuild the world after the devastation of World War II. The specifics of modern design have changed since the 60’s - but the principles remain the same. Clean lines, form following function, geometric shapes, and open spaces are all good things to keep in mind when designing your dream home. Don Draper’s home and office in Mad Men may look dated in some respects, but in others many aspects of the design would fit right in the 21st century. The beauty of modern design is that it is rather easy to update with trendy colors and shapes. Some recent trends in design include white tiles, distressed wood flooring or wall panelling, monochromatic colors with hued accents, tin or copper wall tiles, and painted floor tiles.
Traditional Elegance
Much like modernism was a reaction against the excesses of the past, the beauty and ornamentation from traditional design styles have been making a comeback in recent years. "What’s old is new" holds true for home design, much like everything else. People are realizing that the stark, open spaces that are a feature of some modern designs are not for them. The opulence of traditional design comes from what people desire to see around them. Instead of "minimalism," some people are instead turning to "maximalism" to design their living spaces. After all, who would not want to live like a king in their own castle? Elegant patterns, detail, harmony, and order are all aspects of traditional design. It is based off of 18th and 19th century design, and characterized by warmer, darker tones and ornate detailing when compared to contemporary styles.

A Blend Never Hurts
There is no rule that says one needs to stick to one style. In fact, many modern designs can benefit from a spark of warmth from the details innate to a traditional style. Many design trends bother to blend the new and the old to create something new. Art Deco is an example of an artistic movement that could fall under both modern and traditional. You could update a traditional room with brighter colors or make a modern room look flashy with some ornate patterning.
Make Sure it Makes You Happy
At the end of the day, a home should be designed for the people that are spending time in it. Ensure that you are happy with the style that you choose, and that it brings you comfort and warmth. It’s easy to get caught up in trends and making others happy, but others do not have to spend hours living in your home.
Don’t Forget the Greenery
Whether you choose the past or the future as the inspiration for your home, make sure you brighten up the space and freshen the air with by bringing the outdoors inside. Human beings are, after all, animals. No matter how much we conquer nature, we will never conquer the fact that we are nature. Studies have shown that people feel more relaxed, comfortable, and happy when surrounded by the natural world. Bright, natural light from the sun, houseplants, natural materials like wood or rattan, and fresh air are all good suggestions to help make your home incorporate the outdoors into its design - and keep the humans living in it healthy and happy. Since antiquity, humans have been incorporating natural light, air, and domesticated plants into their homes in order to make their day to day lives feel more comfortable. There are many options and choices to make when it comes to designing a space to live in. With the internet and the retrospect of time, the possibilities when it comes to decorating are more now than ever.
