Losing weight is a concept that immediately triggers most people to think of all that involves diets that are hard to stick to, unappealing food, and waving goodbye to all the good things in life. This or nothing attitude is one of the largest causes of failure of most diets. The fact is that to achieve sustainable weight loss, one does not need to be extremely strict, it needs to be balanced, conscious, and wiser.
Have you ever been so annoyed at attempting to remove the foods that you love? Well, there is some good news: you can lose weight without being totally deprived of them. Actually, even by being able to indulge yourself in your favorite meals but in moderation, your journey would be much easier and much more sustainable in the long-run.
Reconsider the concept of dieting
The initial one is to rethink about weight loss. Rather than thinking of it as a short-term diet, think of it as a permanent lifestyle change. How a tight diet can cause cravings, binge eating and ultimately giving up. When you make it flexible, you decrease the mental stress that accompanies forbidden foods.
There is no perfection in weight loss management, but rather consistency. You do not have to eat perfectly on a daily basis but you have to make better decisions most of the time.
Practice Portion Control
It does not mean that you must get rid of your favorite foods, but you will simply need to control your consumption. One of the best methods to lower the calorie consumption without being deprived is by portion control.
As an example, rather than consuming a full-course of pizza, have a couple of slices of it and complement it with a salad or a protein-based side. When you like desserts, instead of eliminating them, take a small portion. In this manner, you will not be overindulgent and still satisfy your cravings.
It will take some time before you get used to portion awareness, but when you learn to do it, it becomes an effective instrument in your weight loss program.
Emphasis on Equilibrium, rather than Limitation
A mealtime plate would be monumental. Rather than looking at what you should get rid of, consider what to put in. Include more:
Protein (chicken, eggs, tofu, lentils)
Fiber (whole grains, vegetables, fruits)
Whole grain (pastas, rice, etc.)
These types of foods make you feel fuller and less likely to overeat. The balance of your meals leaves you naturally with less to no space and no desire to consume too much unhealthy food.
Follow the 80/20 Rule
The 80/20 rule is a realistic and practical approach:
80%: consume healthy and whole foods.
20% of the time: enjoy your favorite treats
This way makes you remain in check without feeling limited. It also avoids the guilt and binge eating that is usually associated with strict dieting.
You can eat clean through the week and have a treat meal on the weekend; this is an example. The trick is in moderation, not gluttony.
Eat Mindfully
Meditative eating is an easy but effective practice. It involves being attentive to what, how and why you eat.
Do not use distractions such as phones or TV when taking meals. Eat slowly and mind the moment you are full. Often, individuals eat excessively not due to hunger, but as a result of distraction or habit.
You can experience food by eating slowly and even the smallest amount of food will be rewarding, making you enjoy your favorite food without going crazy.
Don’t Calorie Count Your Drink
Liquid calories are one of the most disregarded factors that contribute to weight gain. Even some coffee drinks, sodas and other sweet drinks can contribute a substantial amount of calories without leaving you full.
Rather than avoid them altogether, minimize the intake or change to lower-calorie options. An example is that you can continue to take your favorite drink; however, you can mix it with water, black coffee or non-sweet drinks most of the time.
Stay Active
Exercising is a key factor in losing weight and exercise does not necessarily need to be hard-core. You do not have to spend hours in the gym to get results.
Simple activities like:
- Walking daily
- Taking the stairs
- Home light exercises.
can change a lot in the long-run. Exercise not only helps in burning calories but also helps in cheering you up and enhancing metabolism.
It is a sustainable method of weight loss, when paired with intelligent eating habits.
Plan Ahead
Budgeting your food can make you not make impulsive choices. Feeling hungry and unprepared leads to eating more or eating something unhealthy.
Try to:
Have healthy snacks on hand.
Make food ahead of time.
Choose when you will have your favorite delights.
This way, you are in control as opposed to relying on the will power in the moment.
Manage Cravings Smartly
Thirsts are healthy, it does not imply that you are undisciplined. It depends on how you deal with them.
Rather than disregarding cravings (which can only intensify them), fulfill them in a managed manner. When you are in need of chocolate, take a small portion of one rather than a full chocolate bar. When you are in the mood to have fast food, have a smaller portion or a healthier one.
You can also make healthier choices such as baked foods over fried foods, or make your own versions of your favorite foods.
Be Consistent and Patient.
Losing weight does not happen overnight. Quick repairs tend to give quick recoveries. Constant practices over time result in sustainable outcomes.
You will have days that you will overeat or make less healthy decisions- and that is alright. The important thing is to get back on track and not feel guilty. Long-term consistency is the foundation of progress, rather than short-term perfection.
Weight loss does not imply that you must sacrifice everything that you do. In reality, this habit is very likely to result in failure. The best solution is one that can be integrated into your way of life and enables you to eat and yet make progress.
Through portion control, mindful eating, being active, and having balance, you can reach your goals without feeling a limited person. Weight loss ought to improve your life- not make it miserable.
Once you get your mind off restriction and on sustainability you will discover that not only can you lose weight, but it is also fun and permanent.
