Although there’s never a bad time to give back to one’s community, the summer season will present you with a plethora of opportunities for positive change. No matter where you’re based, finding ways to give back shouldn’t prove difficult throughout the summer months. Furthermore, no matter what your schedule looks like, you’ll find no shortage of options that are suited to your lifestyle. Anyone eager to make their community a better place this summer would do well to consider the following options.
Take Part in Food Drives
There’s no shortage of ways you can help feed people who suffer from food insecurity. For starters, donating time and resources to local soup kitchens and homeless shelters can be an effective way to get food into hungry mouths. Furthermore, many schools, churches and small businesses regularly organize food drives throughout the year – and summertime is no exception.
On the extreme off-chance that you’re unable to find any summertime food drives in your area, consider organizing one yourself. If you’re able to get local businesses and/or churches on board, odds are you’ll be able to collect a fair amount of food. If you lack the personal bandwidth to organize a food drive, consider donating to a national hunger prevention charity. As you’ll find, some of these charities are able to attract such corporate names as Jack in the Box Inc.
Volunteer at Senior Centers and Rest Homes
No matter where you’re based, opportunities for assisting seniors are likely to be plentiful. For example, if your city or township has a senior center, consider volunteering you time. In this role, you’ll do everything from organizing and overseeing group outings to keeping seniors company and engaging them in conversation. Furthermore, many rest homes are always on the hunt for eager volunteers. Although your exact duties will vary from home to home, many rest homes encourage volunteers to converse with residents, read to them and lead group activities. Additionally, as is the case when volunteering at senior centers, you’ll have opportunities to accompany residents on group outings and play an active role in organizing outings that seniors are likely to enjoy.
Help Out at Local Animal Shelters
You’d be hard-pressed to find someone who dislikes animals. Whether you’re a cat person, a dog person, or an all-around animal lover, you should have little trouble finding animal-based volunteer opportunities in your area. For example, many animal shelters are always in the market for enthusiastic volunteers and foster guardians. So, if you’re looking to brighten the lives of animals in need of good homes, such opportunities are certainly worth considering.
Before committing to volunteer at a local shelter, it’s important to understand that this job will entail more than simply playing with cute puppies and kittens. In many cases, you’ll be tasked with cleaning up messes, keeping track of mealtimes and helping animals get proper exercise. Additionally, depending on the type of shelter at which you choose to volunteer, some of the animals you’ll be dealing with may have temperament issues.
Fostering animals who have yet to find their forever homes is another great way to show cats and dogs some love. Depending on how many pets you currently own, how much space you have to spare and how attached you become, you may even want to consider adopting some of the pets you foster. Furthermore, if you’ve never fostered animals before, just be advised that saying goodbye to pets who have been part of your life for weeks – or months – can be an emotional experience.
Put Creative Talents to Positive Use
If you’ve been looking for a way to incorporate creative expression into charity work, now is the time to put your creative talents to good use. For example, if you’re adept at web design, consider revamping the respective websites of your favorite local charities. Similarly, if you have a penchant from graphic design, volunteer to produce posters, website imagery and other art for local causes.
If you’ve been looking for the perfect season to make a positive impact, look no further than summertime. With many communities providing citizens with a plethora of summer outreach opportunities, you should have no trouble finding charitable outlets that agree with your schedule and general lifestyle. So, if bringing about positive change in individual lives and your community as a whole is among your summertime goals, take care to consider the opportunities outlined above.
