Primary care is supposed to be the part of healthcare that patients can actually access before a health concern becomes an emergency. Yet appointments can be difficult to secure, urgent care centers may have limited diagnostic capabilities, and integrative services often exist in an entirely separate world. Healthtopia Clinics was founded in 2018 to offer another approach. Board-certified emergency physician Dr. Joy Hardison created the San Diego County practice after years of seeing how gaps in outpatient care could push people toward emergency departments. Today, Healthtopia combines primary care, urgent care, diagnostics, and integrative and naturopathic services through a collaborative model designed to address both immediate concerns and long-term health.
“The best doctors office - caring staff, talented doctors, always available. I am very happy that I switched to Healthtopia…” - Jessica C.
Building a Different Care Model
Dr. Hardison brings an unusual perspective to outpatient medicine. She earned her MD and MPH from Mayo Medical School in 2009, completed her emergency medicine residency at the University of Arizona, and spent years working in hospitals throughout the Southwest. She is also an adjunct professor at Bastyr University California.
Her experience in emergency medicine showed her how often people ended up in the ER because they could not get appropriate care elsewhere. Dr. Hardison has estimated that about 80% of what she encountered in emergency departments could have been addressed on an outpatient basis. That observation helped shape Healthtopia.
The idea also became personal when her son broke his hand. Rather than automatically taking him to an emergency department, she first tried urgent care. The facility did not have the X-ray capabilities and splinting supplies necessary to stabilize his injury, so she eventually took him to the emergency department where she worked and splinted his hand herself.
The experience raised a practical question: Why couldn't patients have access to a primary care doctor and the resources needed for many immediate medical concerns without automatically navigating separate offices or visiting an ER?
Healthtopia grew from that idea. What began with a focus on making urgent outpatient care more capable expanded as Dr. Hardison saw how frequently immediate medical needs overlapped with ongoing primary care.
“Dr Hardison and her team are wonderful. It's rare you get to speak to your doctor face to face but she always makes time for me at my appointments. She doesn't rush you and listens to every detail. We always come up with a plan and I feel she genuinely cares about me and my health needs. I highly recommend her!” - Gina A.
More Under One Roof
Traditional healthcare categories can make sense from an administrative standpoint while feeling much less logical to the patient. A cough might require a same-day appointment, but it can also involve a physician who knows the patient's history. An injury might need immediate evaluation and an X-ray, but follow-up care matters too.
Healthtopia approaches those needs as connected rather than forcing every concern into a rigid category. Its primary and urgent care services include routine primary care, urgent care, sports medicine, women's health, men's health, sports physicals, medical clearance for surgery, telemedicine, and mobile medical services.
Diagnostic capabilities add another layer. Healthtopia offers EKGs, X-rays, blood draws, on-site laboratory services, select ultrasound, and joint injections. Having those resources available can allow providers to gather information and make clinical decisions without automatically sending patients elsewhere for every test.
“Healthtopia started monitoring my health many months ago. I have received regularly scheduled follow up calls, always on time, always polite, and always addressing all of my concerns. It has been flawless dealing with them and I highly recommend them.” - Mark R.
That model also supports continuity. Instead of treating primary care solely as an annual physical, Healthtopia can address preventive needs, routine medical management, and many of the illnesses and injuries that inevitably happen between scheduled checkups.
Access Across San Diego
Convenience matters because even excellent healthcare has limited value when people cannot reasonably access it. Healthtopia now operates four in-person clinics throughout San Diego County, with locations in Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, Hillcrest, and Sorrento Valley.
The Encinitas clinic is located at 142 Encinitas Blvd. The Rancho Santa Fe office is at 6037 La Granada, Suites B/C. Patients can find the Hillcrest location at 3940 Fourth Ave., Suites 130/140, while the Sorrento Valley clinic is located at 4110 Sorrento Valley Blvd., Suite C.
Healthtopia also offers telemedicine in California, Texas, and Florida, expanding access for appointments that do not require an in-person examination or diagnostic procedure.
“I appreciate the kindness and caring spirit shown by the Healthtopia staff. My phone check-ins are well conducted, fast, and friendly. The reminder texts and emails are very helpful as well as setting appointments, etc. I highly recommend their service. They put your health a top priority!” - William
Insurance is another practical part of accessibility. Healthtopia is in-network with Medicare and most PPO insurance plans for its primary and urgent medical care. Its naturopathic and integrative services operate separately and are not covered by insurance.
The practice has also accumulated substantial patient feedback. As of September 2026, the four San Diego County clinics have nearly 3,000 Google reviews combined, with an overall rating of approximately 4.9 stars. Encinitas alone has about 1,700 reviews and a 4.9 rating, while Rancho Santa Fe has more than 600 reviews at 4.9. Hillcrest has more than 300 reviews at 4.9, and Sorrento Valley has more than 370 reviews with a 4.8 rating.
Integrating Another Side of Health
Healthtopia's model becomes particularly distinctive when the conversation moves beyond conventional primary care. Dr. Hardison has long been interested in bringing evidence-based naturopathic medicine into the clinical environment rather than treating conventional and holistic approaches as incompatible.
Patients can access naturopathic medicine, integrative medicine, nutrition counseling, lifestyle change coaching, botanical approaches, nutraceuticals, supplement recommendations, weight-loss support, wellness programs, and hormone testing and replacement. These services are designed to complement medical care rather than create a competing system.
That broader perspective can be especially relevant when health concerns intersect with everyday behaviors and physiological processes. Sleep and hormone signaling, for example, can influence how someone feels and functions in ways that may warrant looking beyond a single symptom or isolated office visit. Nutrition, activity, stress, medications, medical history, laboratory findings, and lifestyle can all provide useful context for an individualized care plan.
“What a refreshing experience all around, compared to the typical big healthcare groups in San Diego. Everything was easier, Including setting up an appointment, providing new patient information, and quick follow ups from appointments with all the details. Did I mention that they can draw blood in the same office? I will not miss going to LabCorp and all of that hassle.” - Julie W.
The advantage of an integrated model is not that every patient needs every service. It is that different professionals can contribute when their expertise is relevant. A patient may need conventional diagnostics and prescription treatment for one concern while benefiting from nutrition or lifestyle counseling for another.
A Team Instead of Silos
Healthcare can become complicated when every provider operates independently. Patients may see one practitioner for primary care, another for an urgent problem, someone else for nutrition, and yet another provider for integrative medicine. Each may have only part of the patient's story.
Healthtopia was deliberately designed to reduce that fragmentation. Its care team includes medical doctors, nurse practitioners, and naturopathic doctors who can contribute different expertise within a collaborative environment.
“Healthtopia is an amazing health clinic where naturopathic doctors and MDs come together to help the patient. It’s full circle healthcare where they really show they care, spending time to really listen but also look at the full picture for your health. What a great experience it is to be a patient here. I highly recommend them!” - Barbara M.
Dr. Hardison has described her original vision as taking the best elements of conventional and naturopathic medicine and bringing them together. For patients, that means a naturopathic recommendation does not necessarily exist separately from their conventional medical care. Likewise, a primary care plan does not have to ignore nutrition, lifestyle, supplements, or other wellness considerations when those factors are relevant.
The distinction matters because integrative care works best when providers know what else a patient is doing. Supplements and botanicals can have biological effects and may interact with medications. Hormone treatment requires appropriate medical oversight. Lifestyle recommendations may need to account for existing diagnoses, laboratory results, prescriptions, and physical limitations. Collaboration gives the care team a better opportunity to see the complete picture.
Care That Goes Beyond Clinics
Dr. Hardison's interest in changing healthcare does not end with Healthtopia's four locations. Her years in emergency departments also shaped her views about broader problems in the American healthcare system, particularly the administrative burdens and access problems that affect both physicians and patients.
She explores many of those issues through her podcast, "Your Doctor Wants to Quit: Conversations to Fix Our Healthcare System." The show examines physician burnout, administrative roadblocks, and structural problems that can make providing medical care harder than it needs to be.
That advocacy connects directly to Healthtopia's original purpose. Dr. Hardison has said physicians have a responsibility to care for the person sitting in front of them while also considering the systemic barriers that prevent other people from receiving appropriate care.
It is an ambitious idea, but Healthtopia's approach starts at a very practical level: give patients more options before the emergency department becomes the default.
“Healthtopia and the staff go out of their way to make their patients feel comfortable to answer all questions and professionally attend to every detail concerning their health. These people are truly exceptional. I most highly recommend them.” - Kathy H.
A Broader View of Primary Care
Modern primary care does not have to stop at annual exams, nor does integrative medicine have to operate on an island. Healthtopia's four San Diego County clinics offer an example of how primary care, urgent needs, diagnostics, and integrative services can exist within a more connected model.
For Dr. Hardison, the objective circles back to what she witnessed in the ER years ago. When patients can access capable outpatient care earlier, emergency departments can focus more of their resources on true emergencies. For patients, that can mean something refreshingly straightforward: having a care team with more tools, more context, and more ways to help.
