How Homeowners Can Choose Cleaner, More Rewarding Energy Options (Without Changing Their Utility Provider)

A 2025 study found that 66% of Americans support the idea of transitioning to clean energy. But despite the growing desire for clean energy, actually switching to green energy on their own property is often difficult.

For many homeowners, installing solar panels may be too cost-prohibitive to be a good financial option. Alternatively, their home might not have an appropriate roof size or slope for such an installation. Then there are those who own a condo or apartment, but cannot make changes to the roof or utility connections of the property rules.

Fortunately, there is an easier way for homeowners to make the transition to clean energy. As Jeff Rodgers, Chief Marketing Officer of Indra Energy, a provider of residential energy plans explains, modern innovations actually allow homeowners to switch to cleaner energy options without major installation work on their home. In many cases, the transition can even be made without changing the utility provider.

Democratizing Clean Energy Access

For Rodgers, democratizing access to clean energy has long been an important priority. Because of this, his company doesn’t set up household solar panels or make other equipment changes for homeowners. Instead, it utilizes a simpler solution that allows homeowners to make the switch without any disruption to their energy delivery.

“The energy in our plans is purchased from Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs),” he explains. “This means that your electricity usage is matched with clean energy generated from zero-emission sources like solar, wind or hydro. Our natural gas plans are backed by carbon offsets. For these plans, we fund verified carbon offset projects like methane capture and reforestation to balance out the emissions generated by your natural gas usage.”

With this setup, Indra Energy is able to supply electricity and natural gas through existing utility lines. “When we purchase RECs to match your electricity usage, it means that renewable energy will be generated and added to your local power grid. The electricity that flows into your home isn’t necessarily ‘green’ because it is coming from the local grid mix, but buying RECs means that clean energy equal to the amount that you used is being put in the grid.”

For many households, this can make all the difference in making clean energy accessible in the first place — a key priority for Rodgers and the Indra Energy team.

Making the Switch

One unique facet of Indra Energy’s operations is that it functions as a supplier, rather than a utility company. As Rodgers explains, “Because we are a supplier, your existing utility company will still be the one actually responsible for delivering energy to your home, taking care of power outages, reading your meter and so on. In most cases, your existing utility company will even still handle your billing. You’ll simply see a change on your bill to reflect that your energy is now being supplied by us. For the average homeowner, it will almost feel like you didn’t even make a change.”

This unique setup is made possible through deregulated energy markets, a system in which multiple suppliers can sell natural gas or electricity, with suppliers being separate from the utility company that actually delivers the power. Deregulated energy markets are designed to encourage lower prices and give homeowners more choices for their power supply, such as using renewable energy.

Currently, Indra Energy is available as a supplier of both electricity and natural gas in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia. Electricity-only plans are available in Delaware and Massachusetts, while natural gas-only plans are available in Indiana, Michigan and Virginia.

Making Clean Energy Rewarding

While Rodgers feels that going green is inherently rewarding in and of itself, he also notes the value of rewards programs in helping homeowners feel more engaged and involved with their energy supplier.

“We felt it was worth implementing a customer rewards program because it helps create a connection to green energy beyond what you see on your billing statement,” he says.

“We’re proud of our partnership with the One Tree Planted Initiative to plant a tree in honor of each new customer, but it’s important to make going green fun, too. When we can offer rewards points, giveaways and other special promotions that can be used for everything from eating out to Walt Disney World tickets, it helps people feel even more motivated to keep using renewable energy.”

With this level of involvement with the rewards program, Rodgers and the Indra Energy team aim to ensure that green energy use becomes more than just a notice on homeowners’ monthly utility bill. Ongoing participation helps keep renewable energy top of mind at all seasons.

An Easier Clean Energy Solution

Switching to clean energy used to require a significant upfront investment with many logistical hurdles — but not anymore. In deregulated markets where homeowners can choose their energy supplier, switching to clean energy has never been easier. With REC-backed electricity and carbon-offset gas plans, homeowners can continue to enjoy reliable energy delivery to their home while also lowering their environmental impact.

By making it easy for homeowners to make the switch and also offering worthwhile rewards, Indra Energy is helping showcase the possibilities for renewable energy access.
