There are many great reasons why your choice of soap could make a big difference to your skin health, and also the planet. It’s all too easy to pick up a bar of soap at your local supermarket simply for convenience, and maybe also because you like the fragrance description.
However, when you browse a site offering organic alternatives such as Crate 61 soaps, for instance, it should open your eyes to the possibility that it may be better altogether to switch from synthetic to organic.
Here’s some great reasons to go organic with the soap you use.
Understanding the differences
A good starting point would be to have an understanding of what separates the commercially produced soaps you see on the shelves from the organic natural versions you are being encouraged to switch to.
More often than not, the glaring difference between the two options is that a supermarket branded soap is likely to contain artificial additives, and also potentially some chemicals such as sulfates and parabens, which are not exactly kind to your skin.
On the other hand, it’s a totally different story with organically produced soaps made from natural ingredients. These soaps are usually crafted from plant-based oils. They also tend to contain essential oils and a range of botanical ingredients.
In a nutshell, you won’t find any synthetic ingredients or detergents when you buy organic soap. This is almost certainly going to be kinder for your skin.
How effective are natural soaps compared to synthetic versions?
Another valid question is how effective organic soaps are at killing off bacteria when cleaning with them.
Synthetic soaps promote their antibacterial properties, but there’s a lot of debate going on about how great for our health or the environment these ingredients are. The good news is that organic soaps do have natural antibacterial properties too, but they rely on natural ingredients to wipe out the germs. Things like lavender oil and tea tree oil are renowned for their antibacterial properties, so you are not exactly missing out when switching over from synthetic soaps.
The environmental argument
We are all more acutely aware of how our purchasing decisions can impact the health of the planet. Without question, the majority of synthetic soaps are full of the sort of chemicals and artificial fragrances that have the capacity to be harmful to the planet.
Unfortunately, virtually every stage of the synthetic soap making process delivers some sort of negative environmental impact. On the other hand, the green profile of natural organic soaps is much more positive. They are made using plant-based oils, botanical extracts, and a host of other natural ingredients, all of which tend to be fully biodegradable.
The argument for choosing organic soaps over synthetic versions is a compelling one. It is fair to say that you will likely need deeper pockets to pay for organic soap, but that is surely a small price to pay when you consider all the health and environmental benefits.
Once you see and feel how good organic soaps are it becomes quite easy to pass by those supermarket versions when you go shopping.
