New San Diego Craft Brewery: Second Chance Brewing Co.

Second Chance Beer Co. is "brewing up good fortune." Like in their name, Second Chance Beer Co. is  a reminder that when you get a great opportunity, like a Second Chance, it is up to you to do something good and positive. As Brewmaster, Marty Mendiola  says "We are not always fortunate to get a secondchance, so when we do, it is time to seize the moment and make the most of it."

Second Chance Beer Co.,located in San Diego, was established in 2015  by  Marty Mendiola and his wife Virginia Morrison. Mendiola fell in love with home brewing back in 1993 when he first ruined his mom's kitchen. He enjoyed it so much that he went back to school at UC Davis for their Master Brewer’s Program and graduated in 1997. Right out of school, he went to work for Rock Bottom Breweries and over 17 years, he has brewed hundreds of recipes and dozens of styles. 

Mendiola’s recipes and techniques have been honed through many batches, and he’s won 10 Great American Beer Festival and 6 World Beer Cup Awards, amongst others! "Our first beers have turned out delicious, but like a true Mad Artist, I will never stop striving to make them better. I may not turn out the craziest-flavored brews, but I do make consistently clean, smooth beers with great taste and aromas. I remain amazed at the varied styles and flavors that can be made with the traditional ingredients of malted barley, hops, yeast, and water and it is a fun challenge to make so many different tasting beers with those basics," explained Mendiola.

Their first four beers are Luminous Blonde, Seize the IPA, Legally Red IPA, and Tabula Rasa Toasted Porter. Coming soon is  a mild English-Style Brown Ale. Mendiola brews mainly British-style Ales like Irish Red and English Brown, Belgian-Style Ales like Saison and Golden Ale, and American beers like IPA, Rye IPA, Imperial IPA, etc. He also also enjoys working with whiskey and rum barrels and looks forward to getting a barrel program started in a couple of months when they brew a strong holiday beer.

The Tasting Room is a beautiful, fun, and relaxing place to enjoy the beer, spend Happy Hour with co-workers, relish quality family time, and grab a bite from our rotating food trucks. They reused material from the construction, such as gas pipes, for our table bases, as they like to give everything a second chance.  They tore apart whiskey barrels and used the staves for the bar front while turning the metal hoops into light fixtures. While they don’t have dozens of TV’s, we do have a few as we like to keep up on our favorite teams on the weekend. 

San Diegans can expect Delicious beer and a great place to come hang out and hold a party or get together. Second Chance Beer Co is a great addition to the craft beer scene and will attend many festivals and charity events around the county, supporting some very important causes.
