Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and with it comes every guy's annual challenge: "What do I get her for Valentine's?" This year, I decided to shift the focus from tangible gifts to unforgettable experiences. After all, while gifts, jewelry, and gadgets might wear out or go out of fashion, memories truly last a lifetime.
A Discovery of Love and Laughter in Carson Valley
Carson Valley, a winter wonderland, promised just that – a treasury of memories. From skiing at Heavenly to a unique dining experience at JT Basque, and ending the day in a jacuzzi tub for two at Carson Valley Inn, the stage was set for romance and laughter.
Our journey through the Reno-Tahoe Territory began with an easy, less than an hour's drive from Reno to Carson Valley. And let me tell you, the Reno airport was surprisingly easy and efficient. Guided by Google Maps, we arrived at the Carson Valley Inn, which boasted a quaint, ski lodge-style ambiance. And yes, it had a casino! For someone who thought gambling was exclusive to Vegas, this was a pleasant surprise.
Despite the presence of a casino floor with slots and table games, the ski lodge feel remained intact, thanks to the wonderful customer service from the staff. From the moment we drove up, we were greeted by someone who assisted with our baggage, escorted us to the front desk, and then to our room.
I highly recommend upgrading to one of their signature jacuzzi tub rooms. The room radiated charm, warmth, and romance, with a large sitting area perfect for relaxing in front of a cozy fire. The fire was electric, but it gave off heat and dancing flames, adding a real, charming atmosphere to the room. As we explored further, we discovered a large 2-person jacuzzi, romantically situated in the main area. This was the beginning of a great trip!
Whiskey Tales and Historic Trails
After settling in, we took a short 3-minute stroll to the Minden Mill Distilling for a whiskey tasting tour. This informative and entertaining experience took us through a wonderfully restored historic mill with exposed wood beams, a beautiful circular staircase, and many other fine touches. The location was ideal for wedding venues, corporate gatherings, and picturesque photoshoots.
Ryan, our tour guide for the evening, was delightful and very knowledgeable about both the whiskey and the town’s history. He shared fascinating stories about the original founders of the mill and the new owners of the distillery, along with a playful feud between Minden and Gardnerville. We learned how, back in 1906, the entire town came together to build a mill, a creamery, and a railroad to deliver their goods to market.
The whiskey itself was a revelation, each sample telling its own story of craftsmanship and local heritage. Ryan led us through a tasting of their signature spirits, explaining the distillation process and the unique characteristics that define each whiskey's profile. From the rich, smooth notes of their single malt to the bold, complex layers of their rye, the flavors were as rich and varied as the history of Carson Valley itself. It wasn't just a tasting; it was an education in the art of whiskey making, set against the backdrop of the Sierra Nevada.
As the tour concluded, Ryan invited us to the distillery's cozy tasting room, where the walls were adorned with historical photos and artifacts that chronicled Minden's past. Here, amidst the warmth of old wood and the glow of dim lighting, we sipped on our chosen whiskey, reflecting on the stories we'd heard. It was a moment of connection—not just with each other, but with the spirit of the town and its people. The Minden Mill Distillery tour wasn't merely a highlight of our romantic getaway; it was an unforgettable experience that enriched our understanding of Carson Valley's rich tapestry of culture and history.
Romantic Evenings and Morning Heights
Our first day in Carson Valley was coming to an end. With an easy check-in, a budget-friendly distillery tour, and a lovely steak dinner at CV Steak, we retired to our room. The evening was spent in front of the fireplace in our room, admiring my partner as she enjoyed the in-room jacuzzi bath. Let's just say, the next part of our "in-room adventure" is a tale for a less family-friendly story. LOL.
Rising Above It All: Our Hot Air Balloon Adventure
We woke up early, energized for a hot air balloon ride over Carson Valley with Balloon Nevada. Both nervous and excited, we met Sheldon, our pilot with 21 years of experience. His professionalism and charisma quickly put us at ease. Watching him and his crew set up the balloon was a spectacle in itself. Sheldon's passion for flying was infectious, making us feel completely comfortable hundreds of feet in the air. His mid-flight popcorn snack, levitating and defying gravity, was an added bonus!
With an early start, we still had a full day of romantic experiences ahead. Our next stop was Heavenly Resorts for a picturesque gondola ride to the top of the mountain. The views of Lake Tahoe were magnificent – the deep blue water against the pristine white snow was a photographer's dream.
Don't forget to stop at the observatory for full 360 views of the mountain ranges and the stunning Lake Tahoe.
Elegance at Edgewoods Resort
"Back at lake level", we opted for an elegant lunch at Edgewoods Resort. This 5-star establishment impressed us from the valet to the servers, the chefs to the views. The resort had it all: world-class golf (on non-snowy days, of course), breathtaking views of the lake, heated infinity-edge pools, and open pit fires dancing all around the property. For lunch, we indulged in a delicious fried curd and fries appetizer – a must-try!
With our appetites satisfied, we continued our romance-filled adventure with an afternoon at David Wally’s Hot Springs, warming our bones and toes in naturally fed mineral hot springs. Surrounded by locals eager to share stories of the springs' healing effects, it was the perfect setting to unwind and reconnect.
Dinner at JT Basque: A Culinary Finale
Our day concluded in the quaint town of Gardnerville with a casual dinner at JT Basque. Dining there was an experience in itself. As we walked through the authentic-looking saloon bar to the traditional dining room, we knew we were in for a treat. Before even taking our order, we were presented with warm bread and a pot of soup to share. This was followed by a fresh, simple salad, the crisp lettuce snapping delightfully with each bite.
Devanee, our host for the evening, was a local from Gardnerville. Her enthusiasm for the hotel overflowed, much like the generous servings of food. The family-style service meant the dishes just kept coming. And when I say it was one of the most pleasurable meals we've ever had, I'm not exaggerating. It was that good from start to finish. And for dessert, do yourself a favor and try the ice cream.
