If your friends and associates are all in a particular wealth class, choosing the right gift can be a little challenging. When a person has everything, they don't need anything. But there are at least two things wrong with that way of thinking:
- No one has everything. There are always things a person needs that they don't have.
- Gift-giving is not about buying people something they need.
You will never buy a gift for a person if you fret over getting them something they already had. You don't know what a person does or does not have. If someone gives you a gift that you already have, you would still treasure the gift. Having two of something isn't the worst thing in the world. Even if you couldn't use it, that fact would not detract from your appreciation of the gift and the giver. As for buying needs instead of wants, how did you feel about receiving socks for Christmas when you were a kid? Focus on buying gifts that make people happy. Everything else falls into place from there. Try purchasing the following for the person in your life that seems to have everything already:
1. A Coffee Subscription
A coffee subscription gift is one of the most thoughtful things you can give the coffee drinker in your life. You can take the time to discover what type of coffee they like best and offer a subscription for that. Or you could get them something they don't usually drink to have a risk-free way of trying something new. If you buy them the exact coffee, they drink every day, they will always appreciate having more of it. Don't forget about the ecosystem of gifts you can give coffee drinkers, such as things they might enjoy with their coffee.
2. Designer Cakes
Weddings are not the only occasion for enjoying designer cakes. If you have a friend that loves cake, get them a special cake that has a custom message. That person might have a cake every week. But it is almost certain they don't have a cake with your custom gift message on it. You can also go for smaller cakes such as cup cakes and coffee cakes. Individual cakes with individual messages would be a unique gift that you could make even more special by baking or decorating them yourself.
3. USB Mug Warmer
This is a strange category of device you might not have known existed. But once you learn about it, you don't know how you ever lived without it. USB mug warmers are fantastic gifts that you can give to the coffee-lover, tea lover, or any other hot drink lover in your life. These are simple items that plug into a free USB port on your computer and do a single job very well: they keep your coffee hot while sipping it at your desk. Get this as a gift for a friend. Then get one for yourself.
4. USB Handwarmers
Speaking of things you can heat up by plugging into a USB port, try USB hand warmers. These are especially great gifts for people who live in cold climates. It is challenging to find gloves that actually keep your hands warm when you are outside for a long time. You can get disposable heat packs. But those always feel wasteful to use once then discard. USB hand warmers are different because lithium-ion batteries heat up very quickly and can be powered down when not in use. When not used as gloves, some can even top off your smartphone. It is the best use of USB since the battery charger. And they are very inexpensive.
5. A Smartphone Case
Everyone has a smartphone. And the majority of people with a nice smartphone also have a nice smartphone case they prefer. But preference is secondary for this type of gift. The key is whimsy. Please don't get them something to replace what they like. Get them something they will enjoy using on occasion. It is about having options. Having luxurious, funny, or otherwise exciting options is always preferable. Just be sure to find out precisely what smartphone they have.
6. Spa Day
Everyone loves a good spa day, and not everyone loves paying for them. You can get a spa gift certificate covering all the basics such as hair, nails, mani-pedi, massage, and trimmings. This is an adorable gift for those who tend to be overworked and don't take time for themselves. They might not ever spend the money on such an indulgence. But they will most certainly appreciate it if gifted. One of the great things about gifts is that they can remind you to take the time for the more important things.
7. Time Together
Time together is one of the most important things that money can't buy. Your loved ones might have enough of everything that money can buy. But money can't buy you, love. Nor can it buy you more time with the people you love. You can take a weekend to go on a short road trip with your best friend, do a camping trip, go fishing, take in three movies, eat at all the new places in town you have both wanted to try, or almost anything else that time has previously not permitted.
Creating the best kind of gifts requires you to clear your schedule and devote some attention to the people you love. It is better than a gift card and more meaningful than a piece of jewelry. Giving someone a perfect day creates pleasant memories and associations that will last a lifetime.
There is no such thing as the perfect gift. And there is no such thing as the person who has everything. Toss both ideas out the window, and gift giving becomes easier. The only real gift is the gift of love, and that can come in packages of all shapes and sizes. Infuse your gift with love, and it will mean everything to the person who receives it.
