Hear the clipping of hooves as the horses race by, the cheering of the crowd as spectators bet on their favorites. The fall season of at the Del Mar Racetrack is nearing conclusion, but the fashion contest held on Opening Day is still the talk of the town. Five years previously, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club (DMTC) approached Deena Von Yokes about partaking in the fashion aspect of the Del Mar Races.

Von Yokes is the founder and owner of the renowned Studio Savvy in Rancho Santa Fe; currently, she works with the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club on Opening Day of the races during both the summer and fall seasons to produce fashion-based contests. The summer season features a renowned hat contest, where outlandish, beautiful, decorative hats flood the Del Mar Racetrack. In fall of 2016, however, patriotism took center stage.

Because Opening Day for the fall season was held on Veterans Day, the fall fashion contest adopted a Stars and Stripes theme as a way to honor the men and women who serve our country. Awards were presented for the Most Patriotic and Best Pin-Up or Celebrity Look.

From camouflage and garrison hats to red, white and blue chic, the fall fashion contest presented beautiful patriotic looks for all. There was a dazzle to the fatigues, a vintage glam to pinup couture, that tied everything together. With the fall season of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club concluding on December 4th, the annual fashion contest served as a fun way to usher in the classy competition.
