Elements to Making Your Bed a Cloud of Comfort

How many times have you laid in bed, tossing and turning, unable to go back to sleep? I think we’ve all experienced that at some point during our night of interrupted slumber.

In experiencing that, were you able to figure out what the root cause of your disrupted night of sleep was? It’s hard to tell sometimes. Sometimes we carry the stressors of work home with us and that can make it hard to sleep. Yet there are some of us that are night owls and we just simply have a hard time going to sleep.

Whether you can sleep well or not, is your bed even comfortable? Sometimes when we buy things such as furniture and decor (bedding in particular), we tend to look at the aesthetics of it, not necessarily the quality of the actual product.

I’ve been guilty of that in all aspects of shopping, especially shoes. I’ve bought items such as phones, clothes, and jewelry, all based off of how they looked. If I thought it was cute, then I was buying it. I didn’t care about the quality of the product, all I cared about was that it was cute and matched my outfit. With age, my taste in quality increased.

Now, when it comes to comfort, I don’t hold back a bit. Comfort is very important at any age, but you especially want to be comfortable in your own home. Your bedroom is your slumber and relaxation paradise...and your bed should be the most comfortable part of your room. We’re going to take a look at the elements to making your bed your comfort zone.

A Comfortable Mattress

Mattresses come in different price ranges. Typically, the higher the price, the better the quality...and when it comes to comfort, you don’t want to skimp out on that.

When shopping for a mattress, how do you make your selection? Some people will listen to the salesperson, while others will lie down on the different mattresses to see how their body feels.

Personally, I’m a tester. I’ll even do a run and jump on the mattress to ensure it can withstand my tosses and turns, but to each their own.

It’s very important that you make a decision based on how the mattress feels, versus a salesperson telling you how it’s supposed to feel.

Yes the salesperson is knowledgeable on the products, and by all means, listen to the information given, but use that information to make your own personal decision. A bed that is supposed to be firm might feel like laying on brick to you.

So don’t give into the fancy names like "Cloud 9 Comfort Sleep" or "Queen Rest." Only you know what’s comfortable to you, and you should pick the best mattress for you based on that.

Luxury Bedding

When I hear luxury and bedding in the same sentence, I immediately think comfort and top notch quality. Soft sheets, plush pillows, and a warm and fuzzy throw will make that rough day at work all worthwhile.

Quality materials and fabrics are the main details you want to pay close attention to when shopping for pillows, sheets, and duvet covers. You’ll want to look for key phrases like "made from 100% long-staple Egyptian cotton" and "soft and smooth feel."

It's also important to purchase bedding that was made without harmful chemicals or synthetics. Look for labels like Oeko-tex Standard 100 certified. Don’t sell yourself short on the ultimate sleeping experience. If you really think about it, investing in luxury bedding is investing in yourself.

So you have your luxury bedding...you can upgrade your comfort and keep your bed smelling fresh by adding some essential oils to your bedding as well. You can take a small empty spray bottle and fill it with water and a few drops of your favorite essential oil and mist it over your sheets or duvet cover. Lavender would be perfect. It’ll send your comfort to another level.

Oversized Throw Pillows

Who has had to fight the urge to jump on a bed full of oversized throw pillows? I have to fight that urge every time I go into department stores with display beds...they just look so comfortable!

There really is no "one size fits all" for pillows really, but the bigger and softer the pillow, the more inviting your bed becomes. It has nothing to do with quantity, it’s all about quality. If you have 2-3 oversized soft pillows on your bed, you’ve got the right combination for comfort.

Oversized throw pillows work for an evening of sitting up binge watching your favorite show, or falling into a deep slumber one lazy Saturday afternoon.

Mattress Pads

Mattress pads are ideal for adding that extra bit of comfort to your already comfortable mattress. They add extra softness to your bed and also protects your mattress… giving your mattress a few more years of comfort.

There are several different types of mattress pads to choose from, but the most popular is memory foam. Your selection and decision making process should be similar to mattress shopping. It’s another one of those things where you know what feels good to you, and go with that.

Soft Throw

Adding a soft throw to your bed allows you to be comfortable on your bed without getting in the bed. It may be one of those days where you just need to take small nap, but you’re not ready to get in the bed yet...a throw is perfect for that.

Fleece throws are comfortable and also fur throws. Fur throws will make you feel like you’re getting a big hug from a teddy bear, and who wouldn’t enjoy that!

Throws are not too heavy and not too light. They’re a happy medium between a top sheet and a blanket. So when you want to lay down, but not quite ready to get in the bed, a throw is perfect to have handy right when you need it.

Are You Comfortable Yet?

You may not realize it, but your bed is reflective of the effort we put into it. It is the link between a comfort oasis and a tossing and turning nightmare.

As you read earlier, there are a variety of options available to choose from when shopping for comfort for your bed. It’s really a matter of personal preference. From the mattress to the pillow selection process, comfort is the common denominator here, and investing in comfort truly is investing in a better you.
