San Ysidro Ranch Is the Only U.S. Hotel in the World’s Top 25 for 2026

California has no shortage of celebrated luxury hotels, but only one American property has made its way into the top 25 of one of hospitality’s most closely watched global rankings.

San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara has been named No. 22 on The 50 Best Hotels 2026, making the Montecito hideaway the highest-ranked hotel in the United States and the only U.S. property in this year’s global top 25. Amangiri in Utah also entered the list at No. 45.

A California Icon Joins the Global Top 25

The 2026 ranking was unveiled September 15 during an awards ceremony in Paris, bringing together standout hotels across six continents. Rosewood Hong Kong claimed the No. 1 position, followed by Capella Bangkok and Four Seasons Bangkok at Chao Phraya River.

For San Ysidro Ranch, No. 22 also represents a significant jump onto the main list after appearing at No. 68 on the organization’s extended 51–100 ranking in 2025. The 2026 list is based on votes from more than 800 members of The 50 Best Hotels Academy, a group that includes hoteliers, travel journalists, hospitality educators and experienced luxury travelers.

Why San Ysidro Ranch Feels Different

Spread across 550 acres in the foothills of the Santa Ynez Mountains, San Ysidro Ranch has welcomed travelers since 1893. Rather than centering the experience around a traditional hotel tower or grand lobby, the property offers just 38 individually designed bungalow-style cottages tucked among gardens, sycamores, oaks and citrus trees.

The cottages are designed around privacy. Guests have private entrances and adjacent parking, while interiors incorporate antiques, original artwork, stone fireplaces, four-poster beds and oversized soaking tubs. Many cottages also include furnished terraces or patios and outdoor rainfall showers. A History Built on Privacy

That sense of seclusion has been part of San Ysidro Ranch’s identity for generations. Its guest history includes Winston Churchill, Groucho Marx, Sinclair Lewis and filmmaker John Huston, who worked on the screenplay for The African Queen while staying at the property.

Romance is woven into the Ranch’s history as well. Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh exchanged wedding vows on the grounds, while John and Jacqueline Kennedy honeymooned here in 1953. Those stories could easily leave a historic hotel trapped in nostalgia, but San Ysidro Ranch has continued to evolve without sanding away the characteristics that made it distinctive in the first place.

One of the Ranch’s more unusual luxury touches is that dining is included for overnight guests, excluding alcohol. The centerpiece is Stonehouse, set inside a former 19th-century citrus packing house and known for Coastal California cuisine, fireplaces and an outdoor terrace overlooking the surrounding landscape.

The property’s wine program is equally serious. San Ysidro Ranch says its cellar holds approximately 16,000 bottles collected from around the world, while private wine tastings and the Secret Cellar offer more intimate experiences for guests who want to go deeper than simply ordering from the list.

The Speakeasy Adds Another Layer

Hidden beneath Stonehouse is The Speakeasy, an intimate cocktail bar that has become a destination in its own right. Low lighting, live music, rare spirits and polished tableside service give the room the sort of atmosphere that feels intentionally removed from the typical hotel-bar formula.

A cottage terrace, a fireplace, a long lunch or an afternoon beside the pool can carry just as much weight as a scheduled excursion. In an era when some luxury trips arrive with itineraries that resemble board meetings, that restraint feels increasingly valuable.

A Different Definition of Modern Luxury

Luxury hospitality has been moving steadily away from the idea that more automatically means better. Privacy, personalization, access and a strong sense of place increasingly matter as much as marble lobbies or oversized suites.

San Ysidro Ranch fits comfortably into that shift without appearing to chase it. The cottages, gardens, hiking trails, wine cellar and intimate dining spaces create an experience that would be difficult to reproduce somewhere else. The property is unmistakably tied to Montecito and to an older vision of California luxury built around space, landscape and discretion.

General Manager Ian Williams called the recognition “a tremendous honor,” crediting owner Ty Warner and the Ranch’s staff with protecting the property’s legacy while continuing to evolve the guest experience.

That balance may be the point. A hotel that has been welcoming guests for more than 130 years has landed among the world’s top 25 not by becoming something entirely new, but by refining what already made it memorable.

California Luxury Gets a Global Moment

San Ysidro Ranch’s No. 22 position places it alongside some of the most internationally recognized names in hospitality, from Cheval Blanc Paris and Raffles Singapore to Four Seasons Firenze and Aman Tokyo.

Yet the Ranch still operates on a remarkably intimate scale. Thirty-eight cottages remain scattered across 550 acres, surrounded by gardens, mountains and glimpses toward the Pacific. It is a property built to make guests feel removed from the world outside its gates.

Now the world has noticed.
