As Californians, we surely have the privilege of living in the coastal regions. Never mind the fact that we are the central hub to some of the most diverse populations, entertainment industries, trends, and cultural icons in America. Our natural geography gives us a few unique advantages and perks that most if not all landlocked states don’t have– for instance, we get to experience mostly peachy weathers on a daily basis, gorgeous scenery by the beach, and excellent seafood dishes. Positioned right next to the Pacific Ocean, it only makes sense that we get to have the freshest of what we find in abundance. For those that get a hankering for California style seafood, here is one delicious, local restaurant we think everyone must check out!
At 1403 Scott St., Mitch’s Seafood is located at the Point Loma area right next to the beautiful view of the docks. Started in 2008, this restaurant has grown to become a favorite for many San Diego natives in the past decade. It is conveniently open every day from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. with no special weekend hours. The menu doesn’t disappoint, as there are a huge variety of items to choose from. With freshly caught seafood right by the harbor you get to have a whole range of locally caught fish, oysters, shellfish, and octopus. The plus side is that this menu is not just limited to strictly seafood dishes, there are also beef patty burgers, soups, salads, tacos, sandwiches, and even a section of the breakfast meals to browse through. The list goes on. Mitch’s Seafood even made their own twist of crab poutine(a meal consisting of fries, crab meat, and seasonings) based off of the poutine from the Canadian Tim Horton’s. Beer connoisseurs, you are also in luck as this restaurant offers its customers, craft beer as well as wine from the best San Diego breweries and vineyards around.
Depending on the day of the week like most other smaller or local restaurants, the lines are said to be very crowded so try to avoid going at peak hours, like Tuesday lunch hours, to make sure you have some room to sit down. Despite this, people still claim that the food is totally ‘worth the wait’. Another important thing to know is that the restaurant is family friendly and non-smoking but does not have any waiters. You will likely have to go get your own food after ordering. The best part about all of this is that the food is very affordable, anywhere from $11-$30, which is surprising considering they use fresh seafood.
Having a 4/5 rating, many reviewing customers on Yelp have mentioned that they feel relieved that they can literally see the boats bring in the catch of the day right by the window where they eat. They are assured the food they eat is newly picked.Mitch’s Seafood is somewhat pet-friendly as people are allowed to bring their pets as long as they sit outside. What is most important is that at the heart of it, this restaurant does its best to emphasize and promote integrity and sustainability in the way they catch, produce, and cook their dishes and really stick with this principle. Many chain restaurants in particular do not always adhere to this standard so it is admirable and refreshing to see this shift in attitude. Their ingredients are all organic and dishes made from scratch. Their site as well as their Instagram page have everything laid out clearly and in a simple fashion. Just go to www.mitchsseafood.com if you need contact information or wish to get a glimpse of their diverse menu.
