5 TRENDING STREETWEAR FASHION TRENDS – From 2017-2018

Streetwear, who some have dubbed in the past as the ‘antithesis of couture’, has been on the rise and is considered the fashion statement of this decade. Most celebrities and trendy fashion bloggers will sport these either on a daily basis or try it out at one point or another. From Rihanna to Adwoa Aboah, Kristen Stewart to David Beckham, celebrities from all different avenues have countlessly been spotted rocking these trends. Though streetwear is a look that is typically popular and catering to the younger crowd from teens to twenties, just about anyone of any age could take some elements of it and incorporate it appropriately into his or her own wardrobe. Without further ado, these are some of the five currently trending streetwear fashion trends:

1. Oversized, "chunky" knitwear sweaters and hoodies

There is no such thing as wearing something that is "too big" nowadays when it comes to streetwear. Streetwear has become so pervasive that even those that don’t normally wear streetwear take some of its elements and incorporate it into their style— oversized sweaters are one of them. Wearing one of these two sizes bigger that your sleeves swallow your hands is the way to go. Same goes with big hoodies, the ones with giant logos that pop out. The perfect example of this that comes to mind is Kanye’s Yeezys, most of which start from at least a couple hundred dollars.

2. Track pants

Track pants are one example of athletic wear that has combined with the fashion world. Comfy and loose, these are useful for outdoor activities and are stylish at the same time. The versatility allows for them to be worn just casually on the way to the grocery store and even when one is out with friends. Adidas and Nike are the brands that reign in this area, though Juicy Couture has started making its way back into the game back in 2017 after falling off the radar in the earlier 2000’s. High-end brands like Gucci have released their own versions as well.

3. Monochromatic color scheme

Whether it’s black on black, white on white, black and white, or even bolder colors like yellow, this truly takes on the simplicity approach. No one can go wrong with a simple black on black outfit because it’s hard for this kind of color scheme to be so gaudy or crude. Take for instance fashion icons like Kim Kardashian, Bella Hadid, Sarah McSweeney, and Chia Ferragni— all of which have adopted this trend at one point and posted all over their Instagram feeds.  Monochromatic screams chic, stylish, and minimalistic.

4. Bulky Sneakers

Every hypebeast knows that sneakers are one of the primary essentials of streetwear. Sneakers with chunky soles, such as the classic Nike Air Max 1, have become a staple for every sneakerhead. Aerodynamic properties, innovative design, and the comfort they provide quickly made the Air Max a hit with both athletes and everyday consumers. You can rock these with jeans, dresses, skirts, shorts, and basically any time of the season all year round. Because of this trend, athletic brands like Nike and Adidas have really hit the roof over the past few years. Not only that, many collaborations between these athletic brands and luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, and Alexander Wang have taken place. There are Ultraboosts, Air Jordans, Yeezyboosts, Speed Knit Sneakers, Fenty Pumas, and the list goes on. Again, most of the popular shoes seem to come from Adidas, kudos to them.

5. Bomber Jackets

Bomber Jackets are very practical— wearing them slightly more loose with a hoodie underneath to complete the look. This style, as well as track pants, aims to cop a very retro, 90’s look. Now you can find bomber jackets appearing in most clothing lines through the classic, military bomber jackets by Alpha Industries have become the most popular choice among streetwear fans. Even though most bomber jackets are expensive, there are cheaper ones you can find in stores like H&M and retail stores like Macy’s.

Granted these are all trends that have been dominating since mid to late 2017, fashion snobs have forecasted that these will most likely long prevail throughout the rest of 2018 as well. Once a highly male-dominated industry, streetwear has become more mainstream it has branched out to fuse with some high-end couture brand influences. A great, reliable go-to source to catch on to this specific kind of trend regularly is Hypebeast and Hypebae— both these sites cater to men and women.
