Things to Be Aware of When Changing a Filter

Much like those used in pools, fish tanks, and coffee pots, heating and air conditioning filters remove impurities that are found in the air. Even in the cleanest of homes, air filters are needed in order to remove contaminants and the dust, dander, and debris that sit in the air.

Without a proper filtration system, particles can either get sucked back into the vents or never get absorbed altogether. Filters allow us to breathe the freshest air possible and in turn, extend the life and functionality of our HVAC, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning systems.

What Is an Air Filter?

Most air filters are contained within a cardboard frame and are made of fiberglass that has been spun through specially made, transparent cloth. Heating and air conditioning filters are tasked with trapping particles and other types of airborne refuse. Filters prevent these particles from escaping back into the air once they are trapped, making your home’s air quality less toxic, allergenic, and dangerous.

The Care and Keeping of Your Air Filter  

In order to make sure that your Filter King filter is working properly, there are a few things you need to know. The tips listed here are just some of the ways we can help you extend the life of both your filters and HVAC system.

• Check and clean the filter at least once a month, particularly during dusty, windy, or damp weather seasons.  You should certainly check your filters after grooming pets, too, as their dander can most certainly tax an air filter.

• Check and clean your filters more than once a month if there is a smoker in your home.

• Make sure that you are using the right size filter for your system. If the filter is too small, it will not catch everything it is supposed to and will leave your home vulnerable to unpurified air.

• Choose an air filter that is compatible with your air conditioner and/ or heating system. By choosing a filter with the highest compatible Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) rating, as established by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), your chances of efficient filtration increase dramatically.

• Ensure that your filter is inserted properly. They are designed to carry airflow in one direction and can backfire if placed incorrectly.

Changing Your Filter

Checking your filter is necessary, but changing it is equally important. It is in your best interest not to keep a filter in beyond its time, as doing so could cause your HVAC to malfunction.

When Should I Change the Filter?

How frequently you change your filter depends on what the filter is made of and the density of the particles it absorbs. The frequency with which you switch out filters also depends on your system, the quality of the filter, the air quality in your area, what you do in your home (light candles or smoke, for example), and the recommended length of filter usage for your HVAC and filtration system.

What To Be Aware of When Changing Your Filter

In addition to the tips we have already listed, there are a few other things to be aware of when you are changing your air filter.

• Turn off your air conditioner or heater before changing the filter. This will prevent injury, damage to the machine, and the immediate spread of dirt and debris into the air and potentially, your face.

• Discard the old filter immediately upon replacing it.

• Only place ONE filter at a time. More filters do not make for more filtration!  

• Make sure there are no spaces or gaps around the filter so that it does what it should do.

• Record the date when you changed the filter so you know when you should check it again and when you are likely to need to replace it.
