Fashion runways are exciting and full of inspiration, not only for picking out the latest shoes to wear, but also for figuring out what the latest home trends are going to be. In times past it would take four to five years for fashion trends to show up in our interiors, but due to the social media of today, the two are simultaneously working together. With reporters, photographers and bloggers sharing these runway events and posting images on blogs and websites, the line that once divided fashion from decor has literally collided and we are seeing the same trends, colors and patterns in both industries at nearly the same time.

There are several trends occurring right now, at the same time, in both industries, and one of the most popular of these trends is  the introduction of florals. Spring is around the corner and florals are flooding the fashion world simultaneously with the world of interiors. People are becoming tired of bland beige rooms. They want color and they want to feel happy. The economy is picking up and so are people’s moods.

Another trend becoming popular in both fashion and interiors is bejeweled rooms. Bright emerald greens, fuchsias, tangerine and all shades of blues have emerged and bring a whimsical, happy, lighthearted feeling to our wardrobes and interiors. Even kitchens are being transformed with elaborate custom cabinetry painted in rich gemstone colors and accented with gleaming brass, chrome and copper. All types of countertop surfaces have been introduced in recent years that are devised from exciting composites of faux malachite, onyx, agate and other exotic semiprecious stones. Additional composites made from recycled glass and other unique materials are turning kitchens into downright glamorous spaces.

Concurrent with the fashion industry’s introduction of color, florals and exciting materials, people have grown tired of all the dark furniture that has been on offer during recent years. This is likely in reaction to the upbeat feel of the economy; they are tired of dark wenges (both a wood species and color) and mahoganies and are returning to lighter honey-colored woods such as walnut, oak and cherry.

Metallics are still hot this year ranging from stunning copper in highly polished sheens to a beautiful bronze-toned patina. Dazzling baubles and shining accessories can give a modern edge to any decorating scheme that will look current and exciting all year round. Metallics are also being combined, stylishly negating the old rule that gold and silver cannot look wonderful together.

Move over white walls because backdrops with more drama and glamour are here! Dark, moody walls in charcoal, black and navy make a perfect backdrop to all the gorgeous metallic accessories out there right now. Navy is also huge on the runways.

Design is seeing a return to timelessness, as well. After a long run of contemporary and eclectic decor, more people want to feel comfortable and at ease, and many are returning to more traditional styles.

Lots of layering is being introduced in design through the use of color, textures and materials. Metals, woods and fabrics are being mixed together wonderfully, both on and off the runway.

Blacks and whites are still big, but they are also being seen in more subdued, cozier versions. Warmer, softer blacks with creamier whites that still provide a wonderful contrast but give an interior or an outfit a softened rich vibe are de rigueur.

Lastly, there has begun an end to the distinction between indoor and outdoor fabrics and furniture. Outdoor fabrics have undergone an entire revolution. Just recently I was in a high-end showroom and was wowed by the outdoor fabric collections that were being shown. On display was everything, from bright, wild geometric prints to soft chenilles, paisleys, stripes and even furs. The styles and colors have become more varied and luscious than ever before and the possibilities for stylish outdoor living are virtually endless. Even the furniture pieces have become so chic and gorgeous that one would be tempted to haul them inside.

So, next time you watch a runway show, take note of the patterns, fabrics, colors and trends. You will most certainly be able to introduce them into your home in a heartbeat.
