Unusual Types of Jewelry

Not all types of jewelry are standard. We all know the usual pendants, bangles, earrings, and rings, but there are some items that you don’t find in just anybody’s trinket box. Whether you’re just curious or are hoping to branch your jewelry collection out to include some rarities, we’ll cover some of the more unusual types of jewelry in this article.

1. Memorial Jewelry

Not all jewelry is made to celebrate joyous occasions like weddings and births. Keepsake jewelry that holds a small amount of a loved one's ashes seems to be gaining traction. Though the idea might sound strange at first, it could be seen as a way to keep a deceased loved one close, and the designs can be quite pretty.  You can check options like silver chains for women that hold a small urn pendant. This way, you can always carry your loved one's memory close to your heart.

2. Bandeau Tiaras

While wearing a crown or a tiara may seem a trifle pretentious, the bandeau tiara is becoming popular again. It typically consists of a precious metal headband featuring an accent of precious or semi-precious stones placed front and center. While it’s not something you’d wear on the average workday, a bandeau tiara will certainly set your style apart when paired with eveningwear.

3. Ear Cuffs

Ear cuffs are a rising trend that you may well have encountered. Instead of having multiple piercings, it’s possible to create a “cuff” that adorns the entire rim of the ear all the way to the top secured by a piercing through the lobe. Ideal for creating drama when styled with cropped hair on an elegant updo, ear cuffs are even making their appearance as a daywear accessory.

4. Jewelry Grade Hairpins

Adding a little bling with pretty hairpins isn’t a new idea, and wearing precious or semi-precious stones in this way dates back a long way. The idea of wearing real jewelry in one’s hair is making a comeback. If you decide to try out this trend, be sure to choose hairpins that fit securely or you might find yourself losing a valuable item.

5. Hair Rings

If you’re into dreadlocks or braided hair extensions as part of your look, you might decide to adorn them with hair rings. In recent times, they were seen as Rastafarian or hippie accessories, but that’s changing. You’ll see some of the smartest people sporting hair rings these days, and they certainly add an attractive accent to ethnically inspired hairdos.

6. Armlets

When you’ve had your fill of bangles and can jingle along with the best of them, it might be time to move your focus on personal adornment to the upper arms. An armlet wraps around the upper arm and is usually made to be slightly flexible so that it can grip without pinching. The overall effect can be stunning!

7. Body Piercing Jewelry

If you haven’t looked into piercing beyond ear piercings and belly rings before, you might be surprised by the parts of the body that can be pierced and adorned with jewelry. While some of the areas people choose for piercings are not for the nervous, some of the jewelry made for these piercings is certainly out of the ordinary.

Looking to buck the system with some unusual jewelry? Perhaps these ideas will give you some inspiration!
