5 Resume Writing Tips for College Students

A student should begin planning for his or her career before leaving college. The planning involves creating CVs, applying for jobs, and attending interviews. Regardless of the position you are applying for, your resume will determine your chances of success. It determines whether you will beat the competition in applications and nail the job. 

Vetting panels have a lot of resumes to read. They skim through most of them to determine the right candidate for the job. This candidate is determined by the competitiveness of the resume submitted. 1. Create A Draft On The Side

Write down all the aspects you would like to include in your resume. In fact, list down all the courses you have taken and the qualifications attained. Further, write down all the jobs you have taken, whether they are related to the position you are applying or not. This draft will help you to sort out the important qualifications and work experiences that will go into the resume. 

Writing down all the qualifications helps you to sieve and shift through them with a clear understanding of priorities. Writing the qualifications as they pop from your head or work experiences as you fill the page could result in unnecessary additions. It may also result in the omission of some qualifications or work experience that carry a lot of weight and would increase your chances of getting the job.

2. Include Only The Information That Is Relevant To The Position Or Advert

A resume should be short, based on requirements given in the advert. The information provided in the resume answers the questions asked in a job advert. The questions are contained in the requirements listed in the advertisement. Any information that does not provide such an answer should not feature anywhere in the resume. 

Pick the information about your education and experience that will add value to your application. As the vetting panel is skimming through the thousands of resumes sent, it will be easier to spot a resume that is precise. Recruiters give more weight to resumes that provide specific information about applicants. It increases the chances of getting hired. 

3. Provide Tangible Descriptions 

Generic statements will not add any value to your resume or application. Such information as your achievements in different workplaces is important. However, it is easy for people to claim that they were the leading salespersons in a certain company, but the information cannot be verified.

Any claim made on the resume must be tangible and verifiable. For instance, if you were a sales supervisor, indicate that you increased sales by 30 percent over one year. Such results are tangible compared to a claim that you were a good salesperson. Quote organizations and associations that can second your claims. 

4. Highlight Education And Experience

Education and work experience are the most important entries on a resume. Your hobbies and personal data will still be important, but they are secondary. Highlight the highest level of education you have attained or the most recent qualification. Education is used as a vetting tool. Experience must also be included, alongside the responsibilities and achievements that came with the positions you held. 

5. Capture The Right Key-Words 

Review the advert to see the specific elements that the recruiter is looking for. Some of the words include skills required, years of experience, working in particular fields, and knowledge of the industry, among others. Include these keywords in your resume. The words capture the attention of the vetting panel and will increase your chances of being picked.
