Part of creating your wedding look is your hair, and what you will wear on your head. Deciding what headpiece you would like to complement your gown on your wedding day is crucial. It can range anywhere from a small detail to the absolute focal point of your look on your big day. Headpieces usually come in the form of traditional veils, tiaras, flower crowns, decorative headbands, birdcage veils, and hair clips. Each hairpiece doesn’t necessarily require a specific hairstyle, but there are some that were simply made for these pieces.

Traditional Veils

Veils are part of any traditional wedding. Because they are such a huge part of weddings throughout history, there are many variations of them. You can get a shoulder length veil, one that has a train as long as your dress, or a veil that drapes down your back as well as your face. It’s all up to you! Veils are often made of chiffon, tulle, or fancy netting and can have details throughout, like a lace trim or gems. Any kind of updo is great for veils, as they need a foundation to hold on to, which may be difficult to do with your hair down. But don’t let that stop you! If you decide to wear your hair down, have your hair stylist work their magic in securing that veil in with hair pins.

Wedding Tiaras

Tiaras

Your wedding day is probably as close as you will get to a royal coronation, so why not look like a queen? Tiaras can be very tricky, because although you want to look like a queen, you really don’t want to overpower your dress or look like you’re reliving your sweet sixteen. Sticking with a smaller tiara over a big one is your best bet. Most brides who wear tiaras will often wear a traditional veil along with it. Tiaras are definitely more extravagant, which calls for more extravagant hairstyles. Sleek and curly updos are best for this headpiece, as it showcases the details on the tiaras.

Wedding flower crowns

Flower Crowns

Donning a flower crown on your wedding day is all the Pinterest rage! This headpiece is a perfect DIY project. You’ll probably find it a lot easier to use fake flowers, as they are easier to manipulate and won’t wilt on you throughout the day. These are great for bohemian or rustic-style weddings. Because they are more bohemian and laid-back, flower crowns look best with loose curls, whether you have all your hair down, half-up, or in a low updo. If you do choose to use real flowers (perhaps to match your bridal party flowers), make sure to take care of your crown properly. To keep your flower crown intact on the day of your wedding, lightly spritz it with water if you see it starting to droop, and keep it in the fridge until it’s time to walk down the aisle.

Wedding Headbands

Decorative Headbands & Barrettes/Clips/Combs

If you love tiaras as a headpiece but are not feeling as adventurous, try out one of these decorative headpieces! They makes just as big a statement as a tiara but are less intimidating. The best part about these hairpieces is they go with pretty much any hairstyle. Headbands can range from simple strands of chains to a beautiful cluster of gems. If you want a simple hairstyle for you wedding, wearing an intricate headpiece could really bring your look to the next level. A simple hairstyle would be something like a low bun with loosely curled pieces hanging down. Decorative hair combs definitely work better in updos, but you can also leave your hair down and pin a piece back to create texture for the comb to stay secure. Curls really love to be complemented with decorative headpieces, so keep that in mind.

Birdcage Veils

Birdcage Veils

If you want to go for an old Hollywood glam look, go for the birdcage veil. This is definitely not your traditional veil, as it’s a small piece of netting that clips in your hair and only covers a small portion of your face. These types of veils are typically worn with sleek, low updos or with your hair down in old Hollywood curls. This veil is small, but can really tie together your whole wedding look, especially if you opted for a simpler gown.
