How to Turn Your House Into a Smart Home

San Diego Smart Homes

Over the past few years, homeowners have been met with an influx of gadgets that can help make their homes more efficient and entertaining to live in. From advanced security systems to thermostats that turn on with a swipe of an app, and TVs that let you browse the internet on the big screen, there are plenty of devices that have truly transformed the way we live. In this article, we’re going to take a look at a few of the devices you need if you want to turn your house into a smart home.

Heating

One of the best things that the Internet of Things has brought us is smart heating systems. You’ve probably seen the adverts from Hive about how you can alter your home’s thermostat from your smartphone, and while it is cool to be able to do that, smart heating also has cost and energy saving benefits. As the cost of fuel rises, it’s incredibly useful to be able to turn your heating on an hour before you return home from work as opposed to leaving it on all day. So long as you have a central heating system and a boiler, it’s likely you can install a smart thermostat with ease.

Lighting

Smart lighting is one of the easiest things you can add to your home. There are tons of options on the market, and all are pretty cool. Imagine being able to set the lights in your bedroom to gently wake you up on a dark morning, or being able to alter the mood of the lighting in your living room without even getting up from the sofa. Again, many smart lighting devices can be operated from a smartphone so you can turn your lights on and off without even needing to be in your home.

Security

One of the most useful devices that we’ve seen so far is the smart doorbell. Most come with a hidden security camera included, so when someone rings your doorbell, you can see via your smartphone or tablet who is at the door. These security systems can be set up by most homeowners with a small bit of DIY knowledge, and they’re much easier to install than the old, bulky home security systems. And, if they can make your home safer, they’ve got to be a good thing.

Entertainment

Finally, if you really want to turn your house into a smart home, you’ll want some smart entertainment. The first thing you’ll want is a smart TV. These enable you to stream TV shows and browse the internet without the need for a separate device like a Roku stick. You can check out two great options here. Additionally, you could also look into purchasing something like the Logitech Harmony Smart Control which enables you to operate all your devices, including your home cinema system through your smartphone.

Turning your house into a smart home is easier than ever, and it’s something that will become the norm over the next few years.
