Interview with Studio 12.20

March 31st saw our 5th annual Spring Xposure fashion show hit the runway. Gorgeous girls in killer couture strutted their stuff in front of our large crowd of fashionistas. One such local company present at our Spring Xposure event was Studio 12.20. Founded in 1996, Studio 12.20 now boasts four different locations, including Carlsbad, Coronado, and Del Mar. We spoke with owner Heather Payne about Studio 12.20's history, fashion style, and Spring Xposure experience!

Tell me about Studio 12.20. When and how did it begin? 

Studio 12.20 began nearly twenty years ago, with its first location in Hillcrest. It began with the desire to provide well-priced clothing in a boutique environment. When Studio 12.20 began, there was a scarcity of unique, affordable clothing, especially in a boutique environment.

How would you describe Studio 12.20’s style?  

Studio 12.20's style embodies the casual, free spirited living of Southern California. [Our] options are unique, unpretentious, and translatable to many different fashion sensibilities.

Where do you find your fashions? What designers do you stock?

Because the fashion business is highly competitive, we are always in search of new vendors and fresh product. We stock product from near and far, from local San Diego designers, to artisans in Morocco. The designers we stock can vary widely from season to season depending on the response by clientele and the need for change within our stores. But we select every item with an eye towards a bohemian flare and ease of living.

Your store offers a lot of unique jewelry and accessories. How do you select these eye-catching pieces?

When we are selecting jewelry and accessories for the store, we consider how they will relate to the clothing pieces we are offering. We also want to make sure they suite our clients' lifestyles and that each item we select is within a great price point for our clients.

What are some of your favorite pieces for spring? 

There are many pieces we are loving for spring! Our Maaji and Gypsy swimwear, our round, tassel-trim beach blankets for only $49.99, [the] flirty and fun rompers and dresses, and many new exciting home decor items to look out for!

You recently showed Studio 12.20 at our Spring Xposure fashion show. How did you pick your looks for the show? 

We wanted to choose looks that represented the unique aesthetic of our store accurately. ​[Studio 12.20]'s style is very bohemian and beachy, and those looks showcased that.
