Is AC always Expensive?

Having AC is pretty much essential for those in warmer climates, as the home can become very stifling if it’s not in use. There is a preconception that this is expensive to install and run, but does this have to be the case? Here are our tips for keeping it cheaper.

Get a Variable Speed

Older AC models or cheaper ones might just have an on or off switch, which means you’ve got the AC on full blast or not at all. While these units might be a bit cheaper initially, you’ll find that their overall energy consumption is a lot higher. With a variable speed model, you can reduce the speed for cooler days or crank it up for a quick blast of colder air.

This is especially important if you have a lot of people in the home, as they may be turning your AC on and off all day. Keeping a consistent cool temperature is better for the home and for your energy bill! This is also better for the unit and will keep it running for longer, as it’s not always on full blast.

Maintain the Unit

If your unit isn’t performing like it once did, then it may be time for a tune-up. You don’t need to get a brand new unit, as you can get an AC repair specialist out to improve its performance. This is better for the environment and might just save you some cash too.

While you may need to spring for new parts, in this case, it’s a lot cheaper than getting a new unit installed. After the repair, some companies will give you a new warranty on the unit, as it’s working like new. That means if you have any further problems within that time, they’ll come out and fix it all over again. This gives you peace of mind, especially in the summer months when you can’t do without the AC.

Look for Deals

If you are getting a new unit installed, then keep your eyes peeled for deals. Military personnel and veterans can often get a discount on the unit and perhaps on the manual labor too. This can end up saving you a lot of money, so look for a good deal.

While you want to get installation and repair for a good price, you don’t want to go with a company with a poor reputation. If they fit the AC incorrectly or suggest an unsuitable model, you might need to pay all over again to get it sorted.

If the AC is plumbed in or uses electricity, you need to ensure that they don’t rush the installation. Water damage or electrical shortages can be caused by badly installed AC units, so make sure your workmen know what they’re doing.

AC is an expense to think about, but it doesn’t have to be expensive. Just keep these tips in mind if you want to reduce the amount that a cooler home can end up costing you.
