San Diego Company Uses Nature to Bottle Water

Solar Rain's water purification process

When BJ Kjaer smelled chlorine in the water he was using as an organic farmer in Valley Center, he knew there had to be a better way. Reaching out to his old professor at UC Berkeley for answers, BJ was able to gain the knowledge to find out how.

One simple curiosity lead to finding the answers that inspired BJ to create Solar Rain. Later partnering with fellow Denmark–native Christian Fetterlein, these gentlemen have worked together to provide us with a process and product that is much needed during this time of pollution and drought. Their solution is, as the phrase goes, a tall (and clean) glass of water.

Out of all the wonderful things our county has to offer, quality tap water for drinking is not amongst them. We’ve all heard of the different ways our water selections are purified or gathered—most of them involving chemicals and complex machinations— and most of us have wondered why we don’t create a more natural system.

Solar Rain has done just that by finding a way to employ Mother Nature’s natural purification process. First, water passes through sand filters in a system similar to ground water filtering through layers of sediment; next, water travels through screen filters before arriving at the evaporation tank, where it’s heated and evaporated, rising as a cloud before condensing into pure rain. That’s right—they literally "make it rain!" Water undergoes a variety of purifying filters and ozonation before being bottled and sent to consumers. With help from Anthony Savoia, who runs the plant, BJ and Christian are using this unlimited resource to provide us with pure and clean water that is naturally infused with minerals and electrolytes.

Not only is Solar Rain 100% efficient in the process of obtaining their electrolyte–filled water, but the process also naturally produces sea salt. The folks behind Solar Rain have created a bottle that is biodegradable and also keeps out the harmful chemicals we so often worry are polluting our body. Though many companies claim to be working toward more environmentally–conscious products, Solar Rain is one of the few truly forward–thinking products and companies, and we San Diegans have access to it. Friendly and transparent, Solar Rain is the kind of company that is easy to get behind.

Southern California is a place that is proud of being aware and proactive about the environment. At a time of dangerously great drought, Solar Rain’s efforts have become more than a proactive way to help our planet combat manmade damage, they’re defining the future of sustainable products.
