This year, San Diego Musical Theatre is bringing Ragtime to the Spreckels Theatre as their first production of the 2016 season. The show runs from February 5th and ends the 21st of February, 2016.
This musical is a portrait of early 20th century America and tells the story of three families in the pursuit of the American Dream. Filled with pageantry, emotion and hope, the cast bursts onto the stage like no other musical.
San Diego Musical Theatre was founded by Erin and Gary Lewis on September 26, 2006 as a professional non-profit musical theatre organization that produces Broadway musicals. The Lewis family realized that San Diego could benefit from a local, year–round non-profit musical theatre organization. San Diego Musical Theatre’s first season began at the East County Performing Arts Center with the production of Guys and Dolls. Starting in 2015, San Diego Musical Theatre has been able to call Spreckels Theatre in downtown San Diego their home. The goal is to offer San Diego audiences musical theatre shows that are of the highest caliber. The SDMT is committed to presenting, producing and promoting theatre that ignites the human spirit.
Paul David Bryant is the director and choreographer for this production team. Recently, he choreographed and featured in The Full Monty at the Norris Theatre. In the past, he has directed Ragtime over eleven times throughout the country.
Working alongside him is musical director Don Le Master. He has been the resident musical director for San Diego Musical Theatre since 2006 and has conducted many shows for other theatres, such as A Christmas Carol, I Love You You’re Perfect Now Change, and Superstar. He has been honored by The San Diego Theatre Critics with an Outstanding Musical Direction Craig Noel Award for The Full Monty and The Sound of Music.
Tickets for this production range from $40–$70 with discounts for seniors and students. Show times are Thursday at 7:30 pm, Friday at 8:00 pm, Saturday at 8:00 pm and Sunday at 2:00 pm. Patrons can find parking at the Spreckels garage and the NBC Building.
The San Diego Musical Theatre’s 2016 season starts out with a bang by bringing Ragtime to the forefront.
