The San Diego Holiday Dress Code

The holiday season is upon us in San Diego and with it comes the ever–evolving question of what to wear during winter events. It can be a little daunting; with each new type of holiday party—from fundraising galas to family dinners—the dress code changes. Never fret about what to wear again with our handy guide to holiday fashions! We break down what outfits are required for each different kind of holiday event.

Cocktail Parties

This is pretty self–explanatory: for a cocktail party, wear a cocktail dress. But what kind of cocktail dress? Well, that depends on the type of party, who's attending and the formality of the event. If the cocktail party is a work or church related soiree, a good rule of thumb is to wear a dress that extends to either just above the knee or just below the knee. For a formal event—like a work party—if your cocktail dress reaches far above the knee, wear tights to make it more appropriate. Make sure the cocktail dress has straps, or wear a cardigan or wrap on top. For family or social cocktail parties, the rules of modesty can be relaxed slightly. Either way, cocktail dresses in dark colors—black, royal blue, deep red—are always fashionable and appropriate. Designers such as Herve Leger, Michael Kors and Donna Morgan make fabulous cocktail party dresses.

Holiday Fundraising Galas

Holiday fundraisers—such as the Scripps 44th Annual Mercy Ball—are often black–tie events. For most high–end charity fundraiser galas, guests should wear floor-length gowns and heels. These fundraisers are often based in elegance and as such guests should wear gowns that err on the conservative side. Strapless or backless dresses are fine, but avoid plunging necklines and mesh fabrics. Sleek and timeless looks are always welcome, so look for designers like Zac Posen and Chiara Boni. A fundraising gala is also the perfect time to break out any gorgeous and high–end jewelry. Looking for ideas? Try some of the stunning pieces from our recent Tiffany’s photo shoot.

Family Parties

The best part about a family holiday party is the casual atmosphere. With family, you do not have to impress a coworker or gala date. But even though family affairs are more low-key than holiday galas, it's still important to look fashion–forward. For family events, try dark–wash jeans and a cashmere sweater. Wear these pieces with a pair of tall boots or low heels to dress up the look. Neiman Marcus offers a fantastic collection of soft cashmere sweaters, cardigans and coats.

New Years Eve

Do we even need to say it? New Year’s Eve is all about the bling! This is a night where you have to dazzle. Glitter, sequins and rhinestones (or real jewels) rule the night. New Year’s Eve affairs tend to be a little more casual than holiday galas, so break out an eye–catching cocktail dress. Not a big fan of sequins and glitter? No problem! There are some gorgeous cocktail dress designs that feature lace, bows and other stand-out details perfect for a lively party. Whether you’re attending a high–end event or a relaxed holiday party, New Year’s Eve fashion is about showing off your personality with stunning and unique looks. Some designers to consider for a wild New Year’s Eve are Parker Black, Milly and Monica Lhuillier.
