We spend a lot of time and money on trying to present a youthful appearance and delay the visible signs of aging. From covering gray hairs to skin treatments and even surgery, we want to be able to see the younger version of ourselves in the mirror, and to have other people see us as fresh, young and full of vitality.
However, looking young doesn't really make you feel a whole lot better if you feel older than you are. Some of the things we attribute to aging can leave us feeling what seems like random pain, lack of energy, and other less than enjoyable symptoms.
As well as taking care of our outer appearances, the true secret to looking young for as long as possible is to feel young in health and wellbeing terms. Here are three ways you can help yourself feel fresher and younger:
Do Something About Those Nagging Pains
Most people over the age of about thirty complain that they have some annoying pains in their bodies. Whether these are the result of old injuries, postural defects, bad joint health, being overweight or having been pregnant, or any of the other myriad causes of musculo-skeletal pain, it can certainly leave you feeling like you have aged. Stiffness, pain from tense muscles, reduced joint mobility and general aches and pains affect most people to some degree, and most of us just accept them as a part of life and endure them.
However, if you want to feel young, agile and free from aches and pains, it can be a very good start to go and get your annoying pains checked out. In many cases, they can be remedied by things like working on your posture with simple exercises, using things like orthopedic insoles for a while, or massage therapy. In some cases, you may need to look at more serious options, but getting rid of hip and pelvic pain, shoulder stiffness, low back pain and leg pain can certainly make you feel a lot more youthful and energized!
Revamp Your Diet
When we are young, our metabolisms can be pretty forgiving, allowing us to overindulge and eat pretty much whatever we want. As we get older, it can be more difficult to feel good and maintain a healthy weight without paying some serious attention to nutrition. If you find yourself feeling sluggish and bloated, or find it hard to stay in shape even when you watch your calories, you may need a diet overhaul. There are lots of approaches to this, but almost all of them recommend trying to make up at least 80% of your diet from whole foods, avoiding refined sugars, processed meats, and other foods that are in a heavily processed state.
You may also want to look into adding more fish to your diet, particularly oily fish like tuna which have a great range of nutrients that are hard to find from other dietary sources. Also look into plant based superfoods with high nutrient profiles to give your diet an extra boost. There is a lot of talk about kale, however all leafy green vegetables have a lot to offer, and protein rich nuts and seeds can also be a very healthy addition – particularly if you use them to replace high carbohydrate snack foods like chips and pretzels.
Different ways of eating work for different people and there is all kinds of research into diets that help address different issues, but if you lack energy and feel tired, you should put some work into upgrading your diet to help you feel younger.
Take Care of Your Digestive Health
The health of your digestive tract affects how well you absorb the nutrients you take in, and how efficiently you digest your foods. A good healthy set of gut bacteria and a diet rich in fiber to help waste move through your digestive system at the right speed will help you feel much lighter and fresher, reduce bloating and discomfort, and generally make you feel younger.
This is linked to diet, but is something you can also address by eating more fermented foods, and also by taking probiotic supplements or yoghurts. To get more fiber, look for traditional fiber rich foods like bran and prunes, or simply up the amount of vegetables in your diet significantly, focusing on the green ones.
Follow this advice to feel as good as you did before age started to creep up, and you'll soon be feeling as young as you strive to look!
