It is common to focus your attention on the areas of your property that guests are likely to see. Your living room, kitchen, and bathroom tend to be the rooms that receive the most tender loving care. However, perhaps it is time that you spent a little time and money upgrading elsewhere. It doesn’t have to be challenging to turn your bedroom, for example, from shabby to stylish. Continue reading for seven simple steps.

Walls

Sometimes a lick of paint is all that is needed to brighten up a space. Your bedroom is the room in which you spend roughly a third of your lifetime. Although you are probably asleep for most of that time, it helps you to feel better about things knowing that you have created a sanctuary rather than a slum. If you are hoping for a dramatic change, consider using wallpaper to create a feature wall. There is such an amazing variety of patterns, textures, and colors these days that you will probably find it challenging to make your choice. Alternatively, you could choose a contrasting color of paint to create this feature wall.

Woodwork

Yellowing doors and skirting boards are unsightly. A fresh coat of gloss paint can make all the difference. Be sure to cover the floor coverings fully before starting as it is almost impossible to remove. Removing the doors before painting will help too. If you are doing the coats outdoors, be sure to be on the lookout for insects as, frustratingly, they will land on the painted items meaning you have to start over again.

Furniture

These days, furniture does not have to be matching. It doesn’t even have to be in the same type of wood or color. Quirkiness is fun and reflects personality. If your existing furniture no longer floats your boat, but you are on a tight budget, consider upcycling. You could paint the items to create a new effect. A fuchsia bedframe with a teal wardrobe could look stunning with the right accessories. If you have a shelving unit, you could use different types of wallpaper to put in the recesses. Wallpaper can also be used to completely revamp a chest of drawers. There is a wealth of resources available online to support you if that is the way forward.

Bedding

A lot of us are guilty of having the same bedding for years on end, not worrying if it is threadbare because it ‘does the job’. If you look at your duvet, do you see drab or delightful? Splash out and buy something that makes you feel like you are snuggling up in luxury. Do not be afraid to go bright when it comes to bedding. There are some amazing patterns out there. Alternatively, you could choose several plain colors that go well together.

Lighting

Whether you are relaxing in bed reading a book or hoping for some quality time with your partner, the right lighting can make or break the ambiance you are trying to create. A main light is imperative. Choose a light fitting that is sleek and stylish whatever your vibe. Stylish Direct offers a wide range of stunning pieces that might just fit the brief. Don’t forget to invest in some lamps to go either side of your bed too. Bedside lamps that can be dimmed, if necessary, are brilliant. Touch-reactive ones are so handy. We all know how difficult it can be trying to find the switch in the middle of the night when it’s pitch-black. Knowing you must just stretch out to tap the light’s base makes life so much easier. They tend to look great too.

Window dressings

Badly hanging curtains or bent blinds can make an otherwise perfect room seem grubby and unkempt. Curtains that are the right size and are full when they hang can look stunning. Rose gold is a popular color currently which offers a luxurious feel. Blinds can be a great alternative to curtains. If you have allergy sufferers in the house, they tend to be better as they are more straightforward to clean, minimizing the amount of dust.

Accessories

The finishing touches are essential for ensuring you have turned your room from shabby to stylist. Take time to find some artwork for the wall. You could create a gallery wall using a selection of prints and frames. Mismatched can look super quirky and attractive. Alternatively, have a canvas made from a photograph that means a lot to you. A few cushions scattered on the bed and an attractive rug on the floor are musts too.
