Why Are Classic Retro Games More Popular Than Ever?

If you’re a fan of the hit US sitcom How I Met Your Mother, you’ll likely remember that Barney Stinson “only has one rule” but that one rule changes on a daily basis. In several episodes of the show, he argued with his buddy, Ted, over whether old or new is better. Barney’s argument quickly fell apart when his intellectual sparring partner asked him whether he preferred the later music of Guns’N’Roses or the tracks that helped the band rise to rock and roll legend status.

Of course, Barney’s absolutist stance doesn’t stand up to the slightest bit of scrutiny and video games are another notable example of this. Sure, modern releases are good, they add new features, boast enhanced graphics, and include additional online multiplayer functionality. But that doesn’t make old games bad.

There’s plenty of evidence to back up this argument too. In December 2022, Australia’s ABC News reported that demand for ‘defunct’ video game consoles and media was growing. In fact, much of this old gear that, if you owned it in the past, you probably threw away or donated, is now worth as much as ten times its original sales price.

While some of that price increase can be attributed to inflation and a reduction in supply, it demonstrates just how much demand is out there for retro gaming. Now you're probably saying to yourself, "Yeah, yeah. I just need to know where to sell my video games please." However, while we can clearly and easily determine that these numbers are going up, it takes a little more work to understand why. So let’s do that, why are classic retro games more popular than ever?

Nostalgia

A big part of the rise in retro gaming content is nostalgia. This isn’t limited to video games, everyone loves listening to the music that they heard when they were younger. Tracks that remind them of key moments of their lives like a road trip with friends or when they met their partner. Spinning up an old CD or vinyl gives you the chance to reminisce and get lost in these old memories. Interior design, fashion, food, movies, and TV shows are also subject to this phenomenon.

For today’s 30 and 40-somethings, the same is true. But these generations also had video games as a way to blow off steam when they were coming of age.

For them, playing old Mario levels on a SNES, Pokémon on a Game Boy, or Doom on a PC brings back fond memories of a simpler time when they had fewer problems and fewer commitments.

New Playing Options

Playing retro games is not just about reminiscing, though. There are many people who may not have even been alive when they were first released that are discovering and enjoying them today.

Classic card games are one of the best examples of this. They are centuries old but continue to attract fresh-faced players who enjoy them in the same way that generations of people have before them.

Online casinos are one of the biggest drivers of this source of demand. Many create different variants of these traditional titles such as ‘Classic Blackjack’, ‘Premium Blackjack’, and ‘High Roller Blackjack’. Each one uses slightly different rules, sets higher/lower limits, and incorporates unique side bets to provide different strategic challenges.

It isn’t just card games, either. Some games have been remastered and re-released, featuring improved graphics and enhanced functionality. For example, the ‘Definitive Edition’ of the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy contains modern weapon controls with polished graphics that still retain the charm of the original releases.

Single Player Modes

While there is clearly significant demand for modern multiplayer modes in today’s video games, there are also many players who would prefer the opportunity to enjoy the content solo.

However, these types of games aren’t as profitable for developers and publishers because multiplayer modes give them the ability to charge subscriptions and sell additional content. Therefore, single-player options are often neglected or omitted altogether.

So for many gamers, this means that their best options are frequently the older titles that were made in a time before ‘battle passes’ were a thing.
