Vacationing With A New Baby

So, you've made it through pregnancy, birth, and the newborn stage - you can do anything. But, you've also got a critical getaway coming up, and you're second-guessing your ability to make the trip fun and enjoyable while keeping your new baby happy and comfortable. While your child likely won't remember the trip, you will - and you'll be grateful you were able to share new experiences with them at such a young age. While some things will be tailored to your baby and your family's specific needs, there are plenty of bases you everyone needs to cover when getting ready for a vacation with a new baby. Let's look at them so you are prepared for a fabulous time, whether you're headed to Bali or Iceland.

Portable Sound Machine

A white noise machine was one of the first things you likely registered for on your baby shower list. Since electric outlets aren't a standard worldwide, you'll want to bring a portable sound machine. Life for new babies is all about sticking to routines, so you'll want to put your little one down at their regular bedtime no matter where you are in the world. This doesn't mean that your fun has to end - you and your partner can still enjoy wine on the balcony or a card game on a bed while your little one sleeps. Make sure you pack batteries for the machine so you never run out of the soothing white noise they're used to.

Vacation Clothing

Sure, you have plenty of clothes your baby wears at home that you don't mind spit-up and other stains ruining, but you're going to be taking lots of pictures on vacation - especially since it's the baby's first vacation. Make sure you pack plenty of cute baby swimwear, formal wear, and appropriate footwear for activities they may be partaking in. If the baby is walking, you'll want sneakers to protect their feet on rough surfaces while exploring and water shoes to protect them from slips and falls near water. Traveling with a baby on vacation is like running to the store with a baby - you'll bring extras of everything just in case, and clothing is no exception. They're worth the extra luggage, 100%.

A Co-Sleeper

While many families opt to co-sleep with their little ones from birth and beyond, a vacation may be the first time you decide to do so. While most hotels and resorts will provide you with a crib, especially if you're a first-time parent, you may question its durability and safety. Bringing along a safe co-sleeping device like a Doc-A-Tot is an excellent idea for your vacation. While the price may be high, items like this are a significant investment and can be used for all occasions, not just holidays.

Versatile Clothing For Mama

The list isn't just for the baby - it's for mothers. You want to look selfie-ready while you're vacationing, and you don't have to sacrifice your fashion choices just because you're a new mom. Finding versatile clothing that looks chic but allows you to nurse simultaneously is paramount. Maxi dresses made from stretchy materials make nursing a cinch no matter where you are. If you want some coverage, include your favorite designer scarf as an easy cover-up if your baby wants lunch while you're out and about. Button-ups are another easy-to-nurse in top style as well as anything strapless. Make sure you pack extras of everything for yourself, too, because babies have a knack for staining their clothing and our own.

A Baby Monitor App

At home, you likely have a baby monitor in your child's room and then your viewing devices - not only are these clunky, again, but you could also run into adaptor issues. There are baby monitor apps that you can download that help you keep an eye on your little one if they're in another room at the house you're staying in or a separate room of a hotel suite. While you need two Apple devices to monitor - one in the room and one with you - these apps come in very handy and give you the peace of mind you're used to having at home.

A Baby Wrap

You might be used to using a baby carrier when you're not on vacation, but with every square inch of packing space worth gold, you want a smaller carrier than you're likely using day to day. This is where a baby wrap will come in handy. While they are the preferred mode of babywearing for many people, many others get frustrated with them as they require a slight learning curve when it comes to putting them on quickly and securely. An ultra-lightweight baby carrier can be a great alternative, offering comfort without taking up too much space. It’s perfect for those moments when you need your hands free, but don’t want to sacrifice convenience It's worth watching a few Youtube videos on how to quickly wrap your baby up safely to follow along on all your adventures. For a straightforward baby-carrying experience for dads, they make baby-wearing shirts - easily found online. They may not be the most fashion-minded creations, but they get the job done.

Travel High Chair

There are plenty of options for feeding your baby while you're vacationing. If you're trying to travel like a minimalist as much as possible, this next option isn't for you, and you're best to hold your child in your lap and feed them while you also feed yourself. But, if you don't mind taking up the extra luggage space with a travel high chair, they come in handy. They quickly and securely attach to the edge of a restaurant table, and your baby can eat the same way they're used to eating at home. Don't forget to pack some bibs too!

It may seem like traveling with a new baby requires a lot of gear - and there is no denying that. But just like all the other sacrifices we make for our children, having to check a couple of extra bags is well worth it to make sure they enjoy the vacation just as much as you do. Happy Trails!
