Following a fashion trend doesn’t necessarily call for a literal translation. For instance, Issey Miyake found inspiration in the character of birds – specifically from birds "flapping their colorful wings" –, which translated into a lightness and vibrancy within her abstract prints. Inspired by birds, it was not literal, and you don’t have to be either.

Or pick a print that infuses stamps and bird motifs together, as Mary Katrantzou smoothly did in her spring/summer collection by injecting her signature striking prints with even more of an exotic air, creating a collection that was full of stunning complexity.

Pulling inspiration from Brazil’s exotic landscape (her native home), Issa’s feminine interpretation of the bird motif was perhaps the most direct digital rendition. Arousing feelings of 1970s nostalgia, her ethereal caftans featured large prints that evoked the Amazonian Garden of Eden.

Looking for something more reserved? Prabal Gurung unveiled his own gorgeous rendering of the bird print, skillfully incorporating digitally printed bird wings in his monochromatic collection.

And I can’t leave out Thakoon Panichgul’s collection. I loved the way the provocative subject of confinement vs. need to break free was explored – placing delicate birds on cherry blossom branches within in a golden cage.

FINE-Magazine-Fashion-Trends-Bird-Motif-Spring-Summer-2013-Runway-Francesco-Scognamiglio
For night, one could wear the bird motif in a similar way as was displayed in Francesco Scognamiglio’s otherworldly collection. Her sheer collection was dark yet elegant, making use of bird motifs only to further accentuate the sensuality of the pieces through a series of lavish appliqués.
Presented in vibrant or monotone colors, playful or subtle digital patterns, there is truly something for everyone when it comes to this striking bird fashion.
How would you wear this trend?
