Ballet is once again about to dawn in San Diego as City Ballet is scheduled to open their 2016–17 season this November. Performing at Spreckels Theatre downtown, City Ballet will grace the stage November 4th–6th with a fascinating blend of dramatic, classical and contemporary ballets. Here is a quick rundown of the productions that will be featured.
Esmeralda and the Hunchback
It's a San Diego premiere event! Inspired by Victor Hugo’s beloved classic novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the nationally recognized chorographer Mark Schneider has created a colorful, dramatic and poignant ballet that explores different aspects of love and obsession to music by Sergei Rachmaninoff. This ballet will enthrall the whole family.
Raymonda Variations
Never before staged at the Spreckels Theatre, Raymonda Variations by Resident Choreographer Elizabeth Wistrich and music by Alexander Galzanov, is fashioned as a classical ballet show-stopper to highlight the elegance, technique and artistry of the company dancers with opulent costumes and crystal chandeliers.
Bowed Piano
City Ballet's first world premiere of the season. An innovative, highly original contemporary piece by Resident Choreographer Elizabeth Wistrich will show a striking interplay between movement and music using the inner workings of the piano producing startling sounds and thought provoking images.
Treatment
It's another world premiere! An intimate look inside troubled minds. Resident Choreographer Geoff Gonzalez explores the lives of performers and how they cope with heartache and tragedy while they pursue their artistic goals. Featuring an all-female cast, this moving ballet will focus on what dance means to dancers and how it defines them and helps them survive the often unpredictable obstacles that life sometimes sends their way.
