Experiencing Mission Beach and Belmont Park

There’s something magical about rediscovering the place you call home through the lens of a tourist. San Diego locals know we’re spoiled—sunshine on tap, beaches that look like movie sets, and a laid-back vibe that makes every day feel like vacation. But how often do we actually slow down and soak it all in?

This weekend, I decided to ditch the routine and embrace the staycation spirit with a day trip to Mission Beach and Belmont Park. And let me tell you—it was the kind of day that makes you fall in love with San Diego all over again.

The Ride, the Sights, and a Splash of Serendipity

First of all, parking. Let's be real—it’s a sport of its own at Mission Beach. I recommend arriving early or packing a little patience. After a few laps through the lot, I found a prized parking spot and officially stepped into vacation mode. Sunglasses on, phone tucked away, I set out with the simple goal of enjoying the day like a first-time visitor.

The wooden tracks of the Giant Dipper roller coaster peeked over the palm trees like a nostalgic beacon, reminding me that some thrills never go out of style. But before diving into the heart of Belmont Park, my stomach had its own plans.

Cue the happy accident: Pueblo—a chic coastal Mexican spot that caught my eye not only for its gorgeous modern design but also because of its name (a nod to my all-time favorite taco joint back in Florida). Clearly, the universe was telling me to stop in. And I’m glad I listened. The seafood tacos were fresh, the margarita was strong, and the vibe was effortlessly cool.

A Boardwalk Buzz

Fuelled and ready, I made my way to the boardwalk—an ever-changing parade of rollerbladers, beach cruisers, laughing kids, teens with Bluetooth speakers, and couples in matching bucket hats. It’s a sensory overload in the best possible way. Sand in the air. Coconut sunscreen in the breeze. The sound of laughter, waves, and distant arcade games blending into a perfect summer soundtrack.

Of course, you can’t pass up The Baked Bear without grabbing a custom ice cream sandwich (warm chocolate chip cookies and cookies 'n cream, if you’re asking). Or if you prefer a classic cone the size of your face, Big Kahuna’s Ice Cream delivers every time.

The energy here is infectious—like a street fair by the sea. There are pop-up booths, souvenir shops selling ironic San Diego tank tops, and beachwear for every vibe, from surfer-chic to total tourist. Even if you’ve been here a hundred times, the boardwalk always has something new to show you.

Let the Fun Begin

Inside Belmont Park, it’s equal parts nostalgia and adrenaline. I hopped on the Giant Dipper (yes, more than once), and I’m not ashamed to admit my hair was an absolute disaster afterward. I tried my hand at mini golf, got crushed in laser tag by a group of pre-teens, and giggled my way through one of those fair-style strongman hammer games (spoiler alert: I’m not strong).

The whole park has a vintage seaside carnival vibe—with modern upgrades. Arcade games buzz and ping, booths tempt you with prizes you probably don’t need but definitely want, and the scent of churros and Dippin’ Dots follows you like a friendly ghost.

And then there’s that ocean view.

Mission Beach, You Beauty

As the sun began its descent, I wandered toward the water, rolled up my jeans, and let the sand steal my worries. There’s nothing quite like walking barefoot along Mission Beach at golden hour. People tossed frisbees, played volleyball, and stretched out on towels like starfish under the sky.

I watched the waves kiss the shore, seashells peeking from the wet sand like tiny treasures. Nearby, someone strummed a guitar. A dog chased its own shadow. And in that moment, surrounded by strangers and the sea, I felt completely at home.

As twilight fell, the bonfires came alive. Couples toasted marshmallows. Kids ran around with glow sticks. The scent of hot dogs and s’mores filled the air. And just like that, the beach transformed again—this time into a twinkling, fire-lit gathering space for families, friends, and lovers.

I sat quietly, watching it all unfold. The sky faded from coral to indigo. The waves whispered. Someone laughed behind me. And I thought, “I live here.”

There’s a reason Mission Beach and Belmont Park have been San Diego staples for over a century. They don’t just offer fun—they deliver that rare mix of joy, nostalgia, and connection that makes you feel like a kid again, no matter your age.

So whether you’re a local who hasn’t visited in a while or a visitor looking for the soul of San Diego, don’t overlook this oceanside gem. Sometimes, the best vacation is the one in your own backyard.
