With the ever-increasing price hikes that energy companies are applying, it is getting more and more expensive to keep your home warm in the cold weather. As the cold weather sets in, our first instinct is to turn up the heating but when the bill comes through after winter, we can get a bit of a shock. If you’re worried about the cost of your heating bills or simply want to save some money, then there are a number of alternatives to turning up the heating.
Get Creative with Draft Exclusion
You don’t have to go out and buy a load of draft excluders and thick curtains; you can make your own using old sheets, towels, pillows and even old jumpers. Even if you only use them for the very cold days and nights, you will still be able to see a difference if your home tends to lose a lot of heat around doors and windows. Put your hand around the window and door joints to feel for cold air and work out where you need to put your draft excluders.
Fix Broken Radiators
Sometimes your temperamental radiator just needs to be bled to start working again. Having one broken radiator can mean that you are turning up the heat more to get the heat into that room. A new radiator might work out cheaper than the extra costs on your heating bills. If your radiators are getting old, then you might find replacing them will considerably reduce your energy bills. Check out the types of radiators you can get for reasonable prices at warm rooms.
Use a Timer
If you have a timer and you’re not using it then you could be paying for more heat than you actually require. If the house is empty in the day then there is no point wasting heating on an empty house. Set your timer to come on shortly before you wake up and go off a while before the house is going to be empty. Do the same at night time when the temperatures drop more; set the timer before you get home and to go off when you will be in bed. You might be surprised how much you can save through carefully selected timings for your heating.
Close Off Empty Rooms
If you have spare rooms that aren’t frequently in use, keep the doors shut. If you don’t need to heat these rooms then turn the radiators off to ensure that only the rooms that you need to use are being kept warmer. An empty room, just like an empty house is a total waste of heating.
Wrap Up
Before you resort to turning the heating up, think about whether an extra layer of clothing would warm you up. You don’t have to walk around with three layers of clothes, but having slippers or thick socks, or wearing a jumper can get you warmed up without the extra cost.
