Review of "Despicable Me 3"

After what feels like forever since we last saw Gru and company––although the Minions did get their own movie a couple of years ago––the gang is back in action with Despicable Me 3, now playing in theaters.

In this third installment, Gru (Steve Carell) and Lucy (Kristen Wiig) are now super-spies for the Anti-Villain League who unfortunately get fired after they fail to capture the film’s new bad guy, failed child star Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker), who is still stuck in the 80s. And if that isn’t enough, Gru discovers he had a long lost twin brother, Dru (also played by Carell), whose hairstyle is almost Trump-like and is nothing like his brother. The hysterical hijinks in this animated, Bond-like adventure is fun to watch, but the laughs really come whenever the Minions show up on screen.

As much as I loved seeing a whole film dedicated to the Minions, it was nice to see them back with Gru. The Minions are true scene stealers, especially when they accidentally get pulled on stage in an America’s Got Talent type show called "Sing" (a slight nod to Illumination’s last movie called Sing!).

The voice cast in these films are always so great, especially Steve Carell whose is able to have free rein with his characters and just runs with it making it even more fun to watch. Others like Russell Brand and Steve Coogan come in and out throughout the film, but the one that is really hilarious is Julie Andrews’ cameo as Gru and Dru’s crazy mother. Kristen Wiig is just brilliant as Lucy’s as she tries to be a good mother to her and Gru’s adopted children: Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier), and Agnes (Nev Scharrel).

Most franchises tend to fuse out after the second or third film, but Despicable Me 3 proves that third time is still the charm and provides plenty of laugh-out-loud moments for grown-ups and kids.
