The Velvet Fashion Trend

It’s a new year, and while we're all busy brushing the dust off our new year’s resolutions, fashion designers across the globe are dropping their latest season on runways near and far. Attend any reputable fashion show, such as New York or London Fashion week, and take notice at just how many trends designers play. With all the diversity, it doesn’t leave us with much insight on which styles we need to focus on this year. This year, the consistency is noticeable and sophisticated: velvet. 

Velvet made a gentle comeback in 2016, however the trend didn’t really take a firm hold. 2017 is the year velvet finally sticks, what with celebs sporting it in abundance, and high fashion designers using the touchable fabric in ways we never thought possible. New York Fashion week saw the likes of Roberto Cavalli, Dion Lee, Prada, Dolce and Gabbana, and countless others making velvet a highlight of their collection. Unlike the curve drowning, vampire-esque velvet attire of the renaissance era, this new age take on the trend has been manipulated to compliment a woman’s natural figure. The best part? Velvet is being made available in almost every facet of fashion. Find it in dresses, boots, heals, bags, cardigans, pants, and more.   

Velvet Hand Bags

Handbags and clutches are an outlet of expression for high fashion designers. When the season calls for a dash of velvet, possibilities grow exponentially. The pile on velvet (height of the fibers), is short and dense, which gives it that soft to the touch feeling that delights its host. Additionally, it catches light and gives off a shiny, fancy look. Combine these elements with a designer handbag, and you get opulent fashion. Take for example the Prada Cashier Bag ($2,440, Prada) which comes embellished with gold buckles and leather straps for ultra-luxury. 

Crushed Velvet 

Dare to channel the '90s with crushed velvet. A modern and slightly more appealing take on the once popular velour track suit trend. With '90s trends like the choker necklace making a strong comeback (and modernizing itself), you can expect the same with velvet dresses. An updated, refreshing take on an otherwise not-so-attractive trend has made fashion enthusiasts excited about the possibility of fashion evolution! The Velvet Bomber Jacket ($54, Misguidedus.com) features a pale pink crushed velvet look in the form of a bomber jacket which also happens to be trending this season.

Bold Colored Velvet 

What begins as a soft, luxurious fabric is made even more glamorous when it comes in a bold color. New York Fashion Week was made all the more sumptuous with trending bold velvets. This is a trend worth diving into for any upscale event, and the lavish look is deserving of a queen. Stello Velvet Gia ($2,195, stelloofficial.com), an extravagant take on the bold-colored velvet trend, is available in several romantic colors. 

Velvet Boots

Boots have become such a staple in fashion that they are acceptable to be worn year 'round! From short ankle style booties to long, over the knee boots and everything in between, a velvet boot is all too admirable. Embellished Velvet 

Another luxurious take on the velvet trend, embellished velvet heals. Dare we say 2017 is beginning to look like the year of extravagance? Though none of us were around for the renaissance era, trends like this magnificent trifecta take us back in time a few hundred years. Dolce & Gabbana’s velvet Mary Jane with jewel embellishments ($1445, dolcegabbana.com) are a stunning modernized addition to this year’s velvets, coming straight out of their 2017 Spring/Summer collection. Though erring a bit on the eclectic side, these embellished heals won’t go unnoticed on even the most modest of outfits.
