Living life sustainably is in vogue right now, and with good reason given the damage, we have caused to our planet over the last century or two since the world became industrialized. No longer can we afford to treat the earth as the world’s dustbin as we once did, as our oceans are becoming full of plastic, sea levels are rising due to global warming and the burning of fossil fuels, and our land is becoming a rubbish dump.
If everybody chose to live a little more sustainably, then this situation could be reversed. Once again, we could see pristine oceans. We wouldn’t have to listen to heartbreaking stories about dead whales being washed up full of plastic bags in their stomachs. Often, living sustainably is considered hard work, whereas it is entirely possible without having to change your life with a little bit of thought dramatically. If you are interested in this new form of living, then read on as we take a look at six simple but effective ways to live sustainably.
Eat fresh food
When you go to the supermarket, you will have noticed that everything is covered in multiple layers of packaging that is often made from plastic, and this is part of the reason our oceans are full of said plastic. Instead of buying packaged food, look for fresh produce from local farms and local stores, and it is much more likely to be packaging-free, except for the earth from where it was grown. Not only will you be helping to keep rubbish out of oceans and landfills, but you will also be improving your diet immeasurably.
Use a water bottle
How many times a year do you buy a bottle of water or fizzy pop? It is probably too many times to count. Instead of wasting your money and harming the wildlife worldwide, carry a water bottle with you that you can fill up throughout the day when you need rehydration. Once it catches on among your friends, they will all be following suit, and suddenly a new wave of sustainable living will flourish among your friendship circle.
Join a zero-waste club
Living sustainably can be difficult for some people because they are stuck in their ways, and it can be an effort to change. According to sustainable living experts from Puratium.com, joining a zero-waste club will help incentivize you to live more cleanly. You will relish meeting like-minded people who are looking for a more natural way to live. You can discuss ideas to engage the local community to become a beacon of sustainable living that induces others to follow the same path.
Quit using your car
Do you need your car for the five minute trip to the local shops? Of course, you don’t. It is just a habit that you are using when, in reality, you should be using your legs, whether by walking or cycling. By doing so, you will be cutting down on your emissions and your carbon footprint and getting fit at the same time. So, next time you need a pint of milk, slip on your walking boots and leave the car keys on the dresser.
Move bills online
Are you still stuck in the dark ages in that you receive your utility bills and bank statements through the post? Many people are when, in reality, they should long ago have changed to online paperless billing. Not only is this more secure, but it also means that less paper is used, which means less deforestation. The more trees there are, the more carbon they suck up, so just by moving your bills online, you will help to reduce global warming.
Recycle everything
Recycling should be at the top of your list when you are trying to live more sustainably. It is essential to have separate waste bins for plastic, paper, and glass so that each can go to the appropriate recycling center. All food waste should be composted so that the compost can be used on your vegetable patch to help next year’s veggies grow even more prominent.
As we have learned, there are many simple ways to live more sustainably. East fresh food to cut out wrapping waste and use a water bottle to save on plastic throughout the day. Walk or cycle instead of using your car for short trips, and recycle everything you can, rather than sending it to landfill. Join a zero-waste club to incentivize yourself and others, and move your bills and bank statements online to save paper wastage. If we all follow this guide, then our planet will become much healthier in a matter of years.
