There’s never a bad time to bring about positive change or make a difference in the lives of others. Additionally, with so many of us having ample downtime throughout the summer months, summer can be the perfect season for kicking off new charitable endeavors. Whether you’re looking to impact change on a large scale or simply help the people closest to you, summer should afford you many opportunities for doing so. If you’re unclear on where to start, take care to consider the following options.
Volunteer at Local Homeless Shelters
No matters where you’re based, odds are there are homeless shelters – and that they’re always on the hunt for eager volunteers. When volunteering at homeless shelters, you’ll have numerous tasks to attend to. From helping new arrivals adjust to processing donations to assisting with meal prep, there’s never a dull moment for shelter volunteers. While your exact duties will vary from shelter to shelter, it’s in your best interest to take on tasks that play to your strengths. For example, if you’re a wiz in the kitchen, taking point on food prep can help ensure that residents are able to eat satisfying, nutritionally balanced meals. Conversely, if you have a knack for connecting with people, you may be well-suited to guide new arrivals through the adjustment phase.
Volunteer at Local Animal Shelters
Animal lovers who are looking to do some good should seek out volunteer opportunities at local animal shelters. As is the case with volunteering at homeless shelters, your duties are likely to vary depending on the shelter and your level of experience with animals. For instance, even if you aren’t particularly well-versed in dealing with animals, many shelters will still have plenty for you to do. Processing donations, cleaning up messes and meeting with potential pet parents are just a few of the duties you can expect to take on in this role.
Furthermore, even if you’re comfortable dealing with animals, it’s important to understand that your duties will extend far beyond playing with cute puppies and kittens. Feeding, exercising and evaluating animals for adoption are among the tasks with which many shelter volunteers are entrusted.
Foster Animals
Of course, volunteering at local animal shelters isn’t the only way to help pets in need of a home. Fostering cats and dogs can be a great way to help prepare them for adoption and take some of the strain off of shelters. Additionally, depending on how attached you get to the animals you foster, you may ultimately wind up making them permanent members of your household.
Donate Blood
Donating blood can make a tremendous difference to many lives. Taking the time to donate may even save someone’s life, so if you’ve been cleared to give blood, there’s no time like the present to do some good. If you’re unclear on where to donate, simply fire up your favorite search engine to find donation centers in your area. First-time donors would also do well to brush up on Vitalant blood donation types.
Help Friends, Family Members and Neighbors in Need
The adage “Charity starts at home” couldn’t be truer. So, if you have any friends, family members, neighbors or other people in your orbit who are in need, take care to lend a helping hand. For example, if you know any senior citizens who are unable to drive, consider taking on some of their driving errands and/or educating them on how to use modern technology to complete certain errands remotely. Furthermore, if anyone in your life is struggling with mental health issues, provide them with a sympathetic ear and shoulder to lean on and do your best to point them in the direction of professional help. While giving back to the community is undeniably important, doing so shouldn’t involve turning a blind eye to those closest to you.
If you’re looking to be a bringer of positive change this summer, you’ll find no shortage of opportunities. Whether you’re looking to facilitate changes that benefit your community as a whole or simply do right by friends and family members, summer is the perfect season for giving back. So, if you’ve recently found yourself with an abundance of downtime or a renewed passion for doing good, you shouldn’t have to look far to find people and/or causes who could use your assistance.
