Settled in the lap of Batiquitos Lagoon while providing focus to the AAA Five Diamond Park Hyatt Resort in Carlsbad, the Aviara Golf Club celebrates its first 20 years after stacking up accolades from Conde Nast Traveler, Golf Digest, and Golf Magazine – among others. As the only Arnold Palmer designed course in Southern California, it is considered the number one 18-hole golf resort in the region with a 72 par layout over an expansive 7,007 yards of stunningly sculpted greens and fairways.

Serving San Diego County since 1991, the course offers breadth and depth of challenge for diverse golfing capabilities from novice to master. Aviara unfurls itself in this natural setting complete with rolling Pacific panoramas, lush water features, overlarge greens surrounded by muscled undulations, and a nearly three mile subtle elevation differentiation from 100 feet above sea level to 290 feet by the 17th hole; this makes the course, not just a sporting challenge, but progressively visually interesting to play as well. After opening in 1991 and undergoing a refurbishment in 2008, the Aviara Golf Club has come of age. With 200 bird species, exceedingly diverse, and ample vegetation that supports the wildlife home to the 600-acre Batiquitos Lagoon and Ecological Reserve, the greens and fairways unfold the surrounding beauty that is Southern California at its best.

For the past 20 years, Rick Ransburg, recreation director for Aviara Golf Club, has shepherded this territory into mature course one navigates today. Originally "there was nothing here," he says, adding "we took the Lagoon back in time and restored it." What golfers now enjoy is astonishing and responsive integration of a well-managed golf course nestled in wetlands designed to co-exist with nature and mankind equally.

But what about golf? Aviara sets itself apart from other courses, as it extends "high shot values, well cared for grounds, along with its environmental experience," notes Ransburg. "Indeed, there's a richness about this course both ‘upscale yet unassuming’. The Arnold Palmer design has ensured sophisticated routing, quality shaping while netting a reliably protected surface facilitating a golfers’ performance. ‘Rub of the green’ is well preserved, [as] nearly half of golf is played on greens.
