A messy garage can pose a lot of problems for those of us who love to garden. Besides being dangerous, a cluttered garage makes it more difficult to find what you’re looking for in a timely manner. How many times have you spent more than 30 minutes looking for those hedge trimmers you bought last summer?

Fortunately, there are a lot of options for garden storage to help you clear up some of that clutter, and you don’t even need to make a big investment in a shed or covered storage area. With the right help, you’ll be able to find all your tools quickly so that you can get back outside and do what you really love!

Garden Storage Tips

The first thing you’ll want to think about when trying to efficiently store your garden tools is the space you have. Garages come in all different shapes and sizes, and thinking about how you would like to use that space will help you come up with a plan. Think about whether you want your garage to only function as storage for your tools or if you plan on using your garage to park vehicles. Even if you want to use your garage for vehicles, there are plenty of ways to keep your tools out of the way.

Once you decide how you want to utilize your space, take inventory of all your gardening items. Taking inventory will help you know what you’re working with and will start to give you some ideas about what tools and supplies you want grouped together. Try to go ahead and categorize your things together during this time to make the next step easier. Separating your mechanical tools like weed eaters and lawn mowers from non-mechanical tools like shovels and rakes is a good place to start. If you have a lot of pots and planters, you can make them into their own group too. You can even go a little further and separate your things by their size or shape.

Next, it’s time to get creative! Look at the groups of items you’ve made and think about the most effective way to store them. A good way to store long tools like shovels and rakes is to create a rack that you can hang up on your garage wall. If you have a lot of hand tools, consider investing in a peg board so you can hang them up. Racks and pegboards will help keep your stuff organized while minimizing the amount of floor space they take up. For small things like seed packs, you can invest in a storage container which can be placed on top of a shelf. Larger items may need to be stored on the floor, but you can dedicate a space for them away from where you park your car.

Before you go out to the store, try to reprocess old wood and containers. Organization doesn’t have to be expensive, and by using stuff you have lying around, you’ll save a lot of money. Many people have old milk crates lying around that can be used to hold things like gloves and protective glasses. If you want to make some inexpensive shelving, you can usually buy damaged wood pallets from big box stores for a very cheap price. Your options are really endless when it comes to efficiently storing your gardening equipment!
