If you happen to be an avid reader, then having a spare room to keep everything in will help you out a lot. If you know someone who loves to cook but has a very tiny apartment, and still manages to make magic work, then that is the definition of a home that feels good. You don’t need to have a huge space to do this, but you do need to make sure that you aren’t overlooking how important it is to have a space that makes you feel like you are at home.
Sometimes decluttering is one of the best things you can do, as it allows you to have a clear-out without having to worry about anything. If your home feels out of sync with your lifestyle or if you know that you need more out of your home, then simply asking what you like to do and what you can do about it is a good starting point.
Make your Home a Reflection of You
Another thing you need to do is make sure that your home is ultimately a reflection of you and what you stand for. Some people really care about their personal style, and they want every detail of their wardrobe to showcase their unique perspective on the world. Others might not feel this way as much. Everyone has preferences too, whether that is the colours that they like, or the towels that they use. Some people like to have soft towels, and others like to have scratchier, firmer ones. If you can keep things like this in mind, then you will find it easier to make sure that you are reinforcing your identity as well as your sense of space. If you don’t focus on the things that make you feel good, then this will ultimately help you with your home more than you realise. If you like wood panelling, then go for it. It doesn’t matter whether you feel as though it would look dated to the next buyer of your home, because you need to live in the moment and focus on the things that make you feel positive about yourself and your living space.
Know the Meaning of Comfort
Another thing you need to do is know the meaning of comfort. A home that feels good will support your body as well as your mind. If you have ever sat in a chair that feels like you are sitting on a block of concrete, then you will know how disappointing this can be. If you want to do something about this, then focus on building the room around one comfortable piece of furniture. It may be that you look into the best luxury massage chair, or that you make sure that you are taking into account the things that would make things more convenient for you. It may be that you look into getting a chair that comes with a cup holder, or that you get something that makes you feel good because it has plenty of cushions and pillows on it.
True comfort comes down to being aware of how your body interacts with the space. If you have a lamp nearby that lights up the space just right, then this is great, and it can be a very good way for you to turn your house into a home.
Beyond simple mechanics, it’s about the sensory experience that your home provides as well. The rug that you rest your feet on and the noise that your plate makes when you put it on the table are all very important things for you to think about, and they can also make a big difference to the way you relate to your space. If you know that your home falls short here, then try and pinpoint why so you can make the right changes.
Does your Home Flow?
You also need to give some thought to whether or not your home flows, and what you can do about it. Do you feel as though there is a bit of a rhythm that you can get into? Do you find that you are struggling with things? A feel-good home will support the daily functions of your life, and it will also reduce both friction and frustration. You may know some parts of your home flow very well, but if you have some rooms that feel like a nightmare, then this will work against you. Having a poorly organized space is one of the worst things you can have, so try and take steps to try and prevent this by not only organizing your space, but also by taking steps to make sure that it doesn’t get to this point again. Clearing out is one of the best things you can do, but at the same time, you can also invest in things like self-storage as a way to make sure you’re not overlooking the bigger pieces that are taking up space that you just don’t need right now, but can’t throw away.
