Top 8: Best Breakfast Restaurants in San Diego

Summer has arrived, and it's time to take advantage of the boundless opportunities our coastal city has to start the day with some tasty waves and good eats. Whether you begin with coffee and donuts or breakfast at the Del Mar Track (what could be better this racing season than catch the horses working out), it's time to include the sunshine in your next morning meal. From steel-cut oatmeal to apple pancakes, the choices are deliciously endless.

Here, a roundup of the best breakfast places in San Diego.

Restaurants with a view

If your summer morning includes a walk on the beach, consider these options. In Del Mar, head for Pacifica Breeze Café and enjoy breakfast al fresco. Also on the beach, Solana Beach has The Naked Café, and in the heart of La Jolla lies the Nine-Ten Restaurant at the Colonial Inn. There's also a high tide breakfast at The Marine Room, replete with crashing waves at each window to help wake you up. And for members and guests only, the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club is a sure thing.

In my opinion, The Naked Café has the most fun with the choices for breakfast. Consider these menu items: Welcome to Naked, Yin & Yang, Rising Sun Burritos, Artichoke Scramble, Plate of Prosperity, Pancakes in the Buff and Goddess Wrap, just to name a few. Many of these are also available for lunch, however, salads and sandwiches complete the menu.

The Pacifica Breeze Café is another double-header with terrific breakfast and lunch choices. Lunch at its upstairs sibling, Pacifica Café, provides another al fresco dining experience. Both locations have dramatic ocean views, and taking in some of the salt air is another great way to enjoy the morning.

George’s at the Cove provides another opportunity for an al fresco lunch. Terrific food and stunning ocean views pair nicely with Chef, Trey Foshee, who provides magic in the kitchen for dinner at George’s at the Cove California Modern, and his guidance and direction for the lunch menu at the Ocean Terrace. Both are delightful summer dining spots.

Hash House A Go Go is a bit irreverent and whimsical. Portions served are quite sizable and include the hash of your choice with farm scrambles or French toast that makes your mouth water.

If you're a late riser, lunch can be a great day-beginning affair. For a more casual choice, there is Thyme in the Ranch, right in the heart of Rancho Santa Fe. Originally known for its freshly baked desserts, it has expanded its choices to include breakfast and lunch. Across the street is The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, which also offers the opportunity for al fresco breakfast and lunch dining. Sitting on their peaceful terrace almost feels like you've traveled back in time; what a wonderful way to start your day.
