On a cool fall night in downtown San Diego, the Civic Theatre's velvet curtain rises once more. The lights dim. The orchestra warms up. A quiet breath settles over the crowd. Time stands still for an instant and then the music starts.
This is the magic of opera. And this season San Diego Opera invites you to enter that magic three times over.
After a star-studded 60th anniversary season, the company now starts anew in its 61st season a new chapter of musical glory, world-class singing and legendary storytelling. With an unbeatable slate of three treasured productions and a return of top international talent, the 2025–26 season is certain to charm veteran opera aficionados and newcomers poised for their initial experience of the extraordinary.
A Night at the Opera Begins with a Story

Imagine this. You’re seated beneath the Civic Theatre’s chandeliered dome. Around you, the murmur of anticipation fills the air. A couple in black tie clinks glasses of champagne in the lobby. Nearby, a young woman checks her program, eyes lighting up as she sees the title Pagliacci.
What happens on stage that evening is tragedy in its purest sense a heart-wrenching story of a clown having to perform while his own romance ends in tatters backstage. The chilling melody of "Vesti la giubba" rings out through the quiet and you see that this isn't a performance. It's a raw, human experience.
It's only the start of a season designed to move your soul.
Three Masterpieces Return to the Stage
The 2025–26 season boasts three of opera's greatest classics, each bringing its own emotional ride, musical achievement and drama.
Pagliacci
October 31 to November 2, 2025
A tempest of jealousy, betrayal and performance erupts when a traveling theater company finds its own drama supplanting the play. One of opera's most wrenching tales, Pagliacci reminds us that life often imitates art too painfully at times.
The Barber of Seville
February 13 to 15, 2026
Winter turns playful when Rossini’s mischievous masterpiece takes the stage. With its sparkling overture and rapid-fire vocal acrobatics, The Barber of Seville is a hilarious ride through romantic scheming, clever disguises and comic timing that still dazzles centuries later.
Carmen
March 27 to 29, 2026
As spring bursts forth, so does the passionate drama of Carmen. Sensual, daring and unapologetically free, Carmen dances into Don José's world with deadly repercussions. Against the blazing streets of Seville, this opera smolders with seduction and immortal music that resonates long after the curtain closes.
Each opera will be performed over three performances, so you have three opportunities to enter these unforgettable worlds.
The Stars Return and New Legends Begin

Just as each opera has its stars, so does this season. San Diego Opera is pleased to welcome back great vocalists who have wowed audiences throughout Europe, New York and the world. Their voices animate the stories, not with tricks or theatrics but with authentic, soul-stirring power.
And alongside these legends are new talents up-and-coming stars making their Civic Theatre premiere. For them, this stage is something greater than an opportunity. It's a dream come true.
Wherever you sit, whether it's front row or balcony, their passion reaches you. You'll sense it in each note, each breath and each silence.
A Rich Soundtrack from a Beloved Partner
Behind every soaring aria and thunder-of-the-heart finale stands the San Diego Symphony, once more partnering with the Opera in beautiful concord. Their constant collaboration guarantees every second on stage is supported with musical brilliance.
Under Maestro Yves Abel's baton, the orchestra doesn't merely accompany the performers, it becomes an integral part of the narrative, painting with sound and lending every feeling a heartbeat.
The Maestro Who Guides the Heart of the Season

San Diego Opera also announced another thrilling development by offering a contract extension for Principal Conductor Yves Abel to the 2031–32 season. His creative guidance has seen the company deliver some of its greatest triumphs over the last few years.
Now, with his ongoing vision and passion, the Opera moves confidently into its new era. Abel's skill for extracting both power and subtlety from his actors guarantees every evening at the Opera is more than a show but a memory to share.
An Invitation to Something Rare

So why does one find oneself at the Opera for the first time?
Perhaps it's curiosity. Perhaps it's a recollection of music ringing through a great hall. Or perhaps it's the hope to be a part of something beautiful, something that transcends the mundane.
Whatever the motivation, this season is your welcome.
Whether you’re laughing through the antics of Figaro, swept up in the smoky allure of Carmen or shedding a tear with the tragic clown of Pagliacci, you’ll leave the theater changed moved, inspired and connected to something timeless.
Subscriptions are now available, offering early access and premium seating. Individual tickets go on sale September 2 but those who plan ahead will get the best seats in the house and the best memories.
Step into the story. Be part of the season. Let the music carry you.
