6 Steps to Cheaper Utility Bills

Running a household can be expensive, and utility bills, in particular, can become a significant drain on your wallet if you are not careful. Too many people accept the bills that arrive each month as unavoidable, but the truth is that there are usually ways to reduce those bills. The key is to identify which invoices are the costliest and take proactive steps to reduce your usage, reduce waste, and upgrade appliances. If you are under financial pressure, here are six steps to cheaper utility bills, which will help you save money and help the environment.

1. Seal leaks and gaps in your home

Leaks and gaps around your home will lead to wasted energy and unnecessarily high utility bills. If there are gaps around your doors and windows, warm air will be escaping outside, and you will need to use your heating system more. If your refrigerator does not seal properly, cold air will run, and it will use more power to cool your food. If your heating, air conditioning, or ventilation duct are leaking, they will be using extra energy to run.

2. Adjust your temperatures

There are several appliances and systems in your home which work to temperature, and just a slight adjustment can make all the difference. For example, turning a heating thermostat down by only two degrees can make a big difference over time. Setting a programmable or smart thermostat to turn the heating off when you are not home can also save you a lot of money on heating bills. Your refrigerator can be increased to 38 degrees, and your water heater can be lowered to 120 degrees, and both will still be effective.

3. Replace old inefficient appliances

Struggling on with an old and inefficient appliance might seem like the best way to avoid spending money, but it will cost you more energy bills. Replace old appliances with energy-efficient models that use less energy and water, such as new air conditioning installation, new heating, a new refrigerator, a new washer, or a new dryer.

4. Reduce your water usage

We all use too much water, which is terrible for both our wallets and the planet. With a bit of effort, we can quickly reduce our water usage by taking shorter showers, fewer baths, and replacing your shower head with a water-saving model. You can also wash your clothes in cooler water and on shorter cycles to conserve energy and water. If you have leaking faucets, find a plumber to get them fixed as they will be wasting a lot of water.

5. Find a cheaper utility provider

You may be able to find a different utility provider with cheaper rates. Some providers offer more affordable rates depending on the time of day that you use the energy. Besides, many providers will perform an energy audit to tell you where you are using the most power in your home so you can adjust your habits.

6. Be smarter with lighting

You might be able to save money on lighting by switching to energy-efficient LED bulbs and dimmer switches so you can avoid always having all lights on full brightness. There are also smart lighting systems that enable you to turn lights on and off via an app on your smartphone, so you never accidentally leave lights on when you are away from home.
