Catalina Island is a getaway unlike any other, with Avalon as its charming main hub. Surrounded by crystal-clear waters and a wealth of marine life, this coastal haven offers scenic views and a dining experience that promises unforgettable flavors and endless vistas. Here’s a taste of the best Avalon has to offer, with each restaurant serving up its own unique personality and fare.

The Lobster Trap

Catalina Island's Culinary Adventure: Discovering the Finest Bites in Avalon

Arriving just in time for Catalina's lobster season on October 1st, it was fate that our first stop was The Lobster Trap. Known for its newly remodeled interior that retains an old-time charm, this eatery has a cozy atmosphere, thanks to its circular bar and open kitchen. As locals and tourists buzz about, we dove straight into their famous lobster dishes. Their fried cheese curds and perfectly steamed artichokes with herbed butter were a delightful start, setting the tone for a feast.

The main attraction? A classic lobster, of course. Enjoyed best at their Lobster Boat section, which sits higher for a prime view of the restaurant's lively kitchen scene. The food was superb, with portions big enough to share—though I won’t lie; it was tempting to keep the whole plate to myself. This gem is a must for anyone seeking both exceptional seafood and an authentic Avalon vibe.

The Naughty Fox

Nestled on a corner with stunning views of Avalon Harbor, The Naughty Fox is perfect for people-watching and savoring fresh flavors. Max, the manager, informed us that since opening in 2021, The Naughty Fox has become a go-to spot for a laid-back lunch. Their ahi poke nachos, stacked high on crispy wontons, are a savory masterpiece with a spicy kick that kept us coming back for more.

A standout was their lobster BLT—a sandwich so generously stuffed it felt more like two meals in one! Lightly toasted bread, crispy bacon, and tender lobster made for a delightful bite with every mouthful. And let’s not forget the grilled chicken wings, coated in a ginger-scallion vinaigrette, topped with fresh cilantro and chilies. On a clear day, the view here stretches all the way to the coast, adding to the unforgettable experience of eating at The Naughty Fox.

M Restaurant

The M Restaurant balances upscale cuisine with a comfortable, no-fuss ambiance. There's a touch of elegance here without the white tablecloths; it’s just refined dining with a relaxed vibe. Our evening began with a Catalina Sunset, a layered cocktail that was as mesmerizing as the view. Raul, our server, shared the restaurant's history—its ownership has changed hands many times but found a solid footing in 2019 with its current proprietor, Steve.

We couldn’t resist the fried ravioli, golden and crisp, sprinkled with parsley and Parmesan, and served with a creamy pink marinara sauce that was both tangy and smooth. The main courses felt fancy yet approachable, making it an ideal spot for those who crave sophistication with a side of charm. M Restaurant captures the spirit of Avalon with a dining experience that feels both luxurious and familiar.

Bluewater Grill

Perched on wooden pilings directly above Avalon Harbor, Bluewater Grill is a feast for both the eyes and the palate. The restaurant, privately owned by a father-and-son duo, prides itself on serving fresh, locally sourced seafood. Their Chipotle Blackened Swordfish, caught by the restaurant’s very own fishing boat, was the clear winner. Topped with a roasted corn and avocado relish, this dish is a Catalina classic for a reason—its smoky spice and fresh flavors left a lasting impression.

Dining here feels like stepping into Avalon’s seafaring past. With outdoor seating overlooking the Casino and nearby boats, Bluewater Grill is the perfect place to immerse yourself in Catalina’s maritime charm. Even though they have indoor seating, we chose to sit outside, savoring every breeze and the vibrant harbor view. Bluewater Grill is all about celebrating Catalina's fishing legacy, making it a must-visit for any seafood lover.

Catalina Island's dining scene is as diverse as its landscape, with Avalon providing a taste of everything from seaside charm to high-end indulgence. Whether you're here for lobster season or just for a relaxing weekend, each restaurant offers a distinct slice of Catalina's unique flavor. From the Lobster Trap's nostalgic appeal to Bluewater Grill's waterfront dining, Avalon’s food scene promises something delicious around every corner. So take your time, enjoy the views, and dive into Avalon’s finest culinary experiences—trust me, you’ll want to savor every bite.
